bursitis in hip - runners

Has anyone dealt with this before? Suggestions on how to treat it?

I have a pretty good idea that what I'm dealing with is bursitis that's just starting to appear in my left hip.

Any stretches I should specifically do to help?

When I run, it doesn't hurt, but only when I'm walking or going up stairs. How weird is that? I've been icing it and just took some naproxen, which seems to be helping.

Tomorrow I have a rest day, but my long run is scheduled for Friday since I have to work the whole dang weekend (25 hours in two days).

Really hoping I don't have to take much time off.

This has just kinda started to flare up, so I'm not thinking I need to run to a doctor right away or anything like that.

Any suggestions?

  • Whoops! I meant this for H&F, but if anyone on here has dealt with it, please share! :)

  • I have bursitis in my hip - but I also have two tears in my hip. I thought I was just being a baby about my hip pain, but when I went to a chiropractor, she wouldn't even work on it until I had an MRI. That's how I found out I have the tears - and now I have to see an orthopedist.

Anyway, I can sympathize with the bursitis pain. It typically hurts more when you're not exercising, right? Mine is worst when I lie down. I know ibuprofen and Aleve can help some because they are anti-inflammatory drugs.

If it keeps bothering you, though, it's definitely important to go see someone. My first choice is a chiropractor but I know that not everyone has the same viewpoint on that. I like that my chiropractor will do whatever she can for me before she sends me to a doctor for a prescription/surgery/etc.

Anyway, hope that helps - good luck! It is frustrating to get into a good running or workout routine and have hip pain.

  • I haven't had bursitis, but I did have hip pain this summer when I was increasing miles. I did some investigating and asked a PT online that I know and the consensus forme was that I was having tightness in my psoas muscle on the right side. I started doing stretches for it and doing a specific foam rolling sequence for it - calves, IT band, inner thigh, glutes. Overtime it just went away. Hopefully for good...knock on wood.

If you don't have a foam roller I recommend getting one. The two I have bought so far have been good investments.

I appreciate the imput. I'm definitely looking into foam rollers...hoping to get some tomorrow.

Hip is feeling much better today!
