We had to be there at 6am, bleh, the roads really weren't too bad. But of course we were in a rush this morning so bad mommy forgot to take Jake's stuffed bunny. But he got to pick out a new stuffed animal when we got there, so that entertained him for a bit while we were waiting. Jake did not want them putting that oxygen thing on his finger or taking his blood pressure, so they had to hold off on that until he went back for the surgery.
Overall it went pretty quickly, we left Jake with one of the nurses at about 7:10. We went out into the waiting room and they did the ear tubes and then the BAER hearing test. We talked with the Dr. at about 7:40 when everything was finished, he told us his hearing was good except he has some hearing loss at 500 Hz, which he said is nothing to be concerned about. We then went back out into the waiting room to wait for them to call us back to Recovery. We got called back to recover about 7:55 and Jake was still waking up and was screaming and crying while one of the nurses was holding him. They handed him over to me and I still couldn't calm him down. After 5 minutes or so of screaming we got him to drink some apple juice. That calmed him down till he ran out of juice. So we had to get him more juice. 2.5 sippy cups of apple juice later he was calmer but still upset. He just cried and cried until we left. Then after about 5 minutes in the car he was calm.
When we got home we tried to get him to eat a little then we put him down for a nap (and the rest of us took a nap too). Now he is up and is totally back to himself like nothing happened.

We were not allowed to be in recovery before they woke him up. To be honest, I don't think it mattered, they had woke him up maybe 2 minutes before the called us back and Jake had not even opened his eyes yet. He was so out of it from the anesthesia that he really didn't know what was going on and it was no more comforting for him to be with me compared to the nurse. I think it's actually tougher on the little ones when the nurse walks away with them to take them to surgery because they are still awake and very aware of what's going on.
I think I asked my ENT what happens if he gets an ear infection and he said it didn't matter, but I'm not for sure on that.Married My Best Friend On May 23rd, 2009
