We're doing Melbourne, Great Ocean Road, Port Douglas/GBR, Brisbane (we have friends there) and Sydney.  We only have 2 days in Melbourne (+ another 2 days for the drive), and I've heard it's a great city.  Any recommendations on what to do/see there?  We're considering going down to Phillip Island to see the penguins, but I don't know if it's worth it given the limited time we have in the city anyways.  Any thoughts?

  • Melbourne is a great city, but it doesn't have a ton to see in the way of tourist attractions.  I would definitely head to Phillip Island to check out the penguins.  It's pretty close (I think about an hour and a half drive), and the penguins come in pretty late (after sundown), so it doesn't kill the entire day.  I would also recommend the Royal Botanical Gardens if you are in the mood for a stroll, Lygon Street for some little Italy shopping and gelato.  There's also a great bakery near there, just off Lygon.  I think it was called Thresherman's Bakehouse, but I can't seem to find a website to be sure.  I would also check out the old jail.  I think they may even have evening tours.  Brunswick street is great for local funky boutiques and little cafes.  It was one of my favorite hangouts to sit and write for my creative writting class.  Oh, and don't forget to go see Brighton Beach.  It has tons of painted beach houses and is super cute.  I don't remember as much about Sydney, as I was only there for a few days, but there is an area down on the water near the rocks where there are cute and romantic restaurants.  I was of course there with my mom, but it was cool nonetheless.  I would also recommend doing the bridge climb.  It was fun, and a great way to see the city.  And obviously, check out the Opera House (just to forewarn you, I thought it was overrated, but still worth the tour).  If I think of anything else, I'll definitely let you know.

  • Thanks so much!  I'm going to try to put together our detailed plan this weekend, so I'll let you know if I have any follow ups!
