Weekend Gardeners aka Ashlee & KK

I saw on FB that you guys are starting your gardens this weekend. What are you putting in?

Re: Weekend Gardeners aka Ashlee & KK

  • due to the failboats of last year, i'm cutting way back, and only growing things that I know will do well: tomatoes (roma, beefsteak, cherry and a supersweet mini cherry), peppers (bell, poblano, jalapeno), eggplant (heirloom and black beauty) and snow peas. then I have 12 pots for herbs: basil (3), rosemary, parsley, cilantro (2), oregano, mint, tarragon, chives, lavendar

i've got it all started from seed right now under my grow light, and then i'll start another batch of seeds so I can have some plants staggered for all-summer/fall harvesting. last year I planted 3 times and had tomatoes well into november. at the end of the season, I might plant squash and pumpkin seeds in the front patch and let them grow wild, last year they grew really well, but took up too much space so at the very end of the season i'll let them go and see what happens.

  • ::Butting in::

I'm so jealous. I can't wait to be able to plant my own garden. I'll probably fail miserably at it but it's something I really want to give a shot.

Thanks! I definitely will! I want a garden, and then I also really want to plant blue hydrangea bushes. I know how hard it will be but I still want to give it a shot.

  • I'm really happy you posted this!  I want to plant a garden but I have no clue what I can plant in the sand that is called soil here.

I need to do some homework and see what I can plant and do well.  I want a garden real bad like.  lol

  • my problem was I was so focused on being 100% organic that I didn't bother getting insect killers and hornworms and other bugs ended up eating about 9/10 of my tomatoes. i also over-crowded my plants and didn't give them enough room. and towards the end of august/september it was SO dry here, that killed my plants.

but moving forward, i know to give them space, kill the bugs with non-organic stuff if necessary, and use miracle grow every single week (or something like it) because the soil here is sandy and just doesn't have enough nutrients. i also have been raking in compost every few weeks so hopefully that will help.

it's really not that hard, i promise. i maybe watered the garden once during the week, and then on saturday morning or sunday morning i'd spend 2-3 hours weeding, feeding, pruning, and tying up tomatoes. i plan to give it more attention this year, but still not that much.

and those hornworms are going down!

  • This year we are planting:
    sweet potatoes
    some kind of white potato
    crook neck yellow squash
    zucchini
    roma tomatoes
    cucumbers (2 kinds)
    green beans
    garlic
    rhubarb
    watermelon
    cataloupe
    small sugar pumpkins
    peppers (sweet banana, jalapenos, cayanne)
    eggplant
    carrots
    spring onions
    red onions
    shitaki mushrooms

We also have an herb garden with sweet basil, purple basil, catnip, lavender, greek oregano, dill, cilantro, chives & mint (regular & orange).

Wow, I am tired just writing all that!  Our main garden is a concrete pad (12X12) and on that we have a 4X4 and a 10X5 raised bedst.  We also have a bunch of smart pots (http://www.smartpots.com/) that we use along our fence line (with a huge piece of lattice behind for support) for the "climbing" plants.  They are the best thing ever!  The potatoes we have in a separate area on the side of our house near a green space.

  • Seriously about those hornworms. The first time I was picking tomatoes and happened upon a 4 incher, I about jumped out of my skin. I took particular pleasure in picking them all off and dumping them in the bird feeder.

So the idea is to space the plants out?

I hadn't thought of planting tomatoes this early before, for some reason, but it makes sense. I barely got anything from my crop last year because my raised beds are in the direct sun and it was over 90 out there.

Fortunately, most of my mint and fennel survived the winter. We'll have to see how the butterfly plants did when it warms up more consistently.

  • Ash, I had no idea you had the gardening blog.  I'm reading it now.

I can't wait until I have a yard.  I want to have a little garden so badly.  I might try some container gardening this year.

  • I missed this post last week, but we also started our garden this weekend. I'm doing mostly tomatoes and peppers since that's what I had the most success with last year. I bought 4 types of hot peppers, 4 sweet/bell pepper varieties, 2 different cherry tomatoes, and 2 different regular tomatoes. I also got some zucchini, watermelon, and onions.

There's a farm nearby where I bought all the little starter plants. This weekend was the beginning of their plant sale and they said this is a good time to plant, so that's what I'm going by.

Our cilantro, rosemary, mint, and oregano are all doing great. I need to replant my basil and maybe thyme.

  • Our raised beds are the only thing green in our backyard right now... because they are full of weeds. Embarrassed
