Re: speaking of planned parenthood...

  • I might be wrong, but I thought you could only get an IUD if you've already had at least one child...?  What is Implanon - is that the one you have implanted in your arm?

I read about quite a few ladies getting pregnant with Merena.  Like, way more than would make me comfortable using it.  Not to mention the stories of heavier/longer periods - no thank you.  Similar stories with other IUDs as well, but I haven't researched thoroughly enough yet.

I don't know about anything other than the Depo shot and the pill.  I have no clue what I will use once this baby is born.  It's obvious that we were not consistent with condoms and I hate hate hate how the pill made me feel - despite easy peasy periods, I just had zero interest in sex - booo!!.  :(  I personally had no real problems with Depo (other than the weight gain!!!!!), but I mean no mood swings, didn't affect my sex drive whatsoever, didn't make my hair fall out, etc etc.  But I don't think I would ever use it again... I am just concerned about the weight gain.
  • I thought Mirena was only for those that have had a child?  I might be wrong on this.

I don't know much about IUD's except for the fact that a girl in my class had one and it failed - she's now 6mo. pregnant with her 6th child!  OMG!

ZOMG haha. Im leaning toward the implanon but I just am so uninformed on it, and ofcourse I fear the unknown.

Yes and it is 99% effective for 3 years. However its like 400 upfront, and IDK how much our insurance would cover. Removal is 150

  • Yah I think most of those you have to have one child first.

You can probably call your insurance and ask about Implanon...honestly they may cover a lot because cost of that vs cost of baby for them is much less haha

I hated the depo shot and my doc won't even do them anymore.  I had a period the entire 6 months they made me stay on it (except for a total of 2 weeks).  I didn't have any mood swings but I read a lot that many women became very depressed, and weight gain like nola said...that didn't happen to me either however I was also 21 and working out 5 times a week so who knows haha

  • You don't have to have had a child to get a Mierena or Paraguard (the copper IUD).  If you've had a child, it will be easier to place bc your cervix has been dilated before.  Also, some dr's refuse to do it if you haven't had a kid, but you can find some who will.

They can also give you something that will dilate your cervix approx. 2 cm. which will help with insertion.  They also recommend taking a lot of ibprofen before the insertion.

It can be painful, but most people said it subsides after a few seconds and some have cramping for a day or so, but that's nothing worse than normal cramps.

I've heard really great things about Mirena and am pretty sure I'll end up getting it at some point this year.  I've been contemplating it for awhile.  My insurance will cover a percentage and since it lasts for 5 years, I'll actually be saving money on BC in the long run.

I've never heard about anyone getting pregnant on it...although it can happen if it isn't placed right.  But that's why I'd use condoms until I had my follow-up (within a month) to make sure it's still in place.

  • Whatever you do don't go on Depo!  Seriously I regret taking depo so much and if I had realized what if was going to do to my body I would have never gone on it.  Not to mention most people coming off depo have a terrible time TTC afterward.  PLUS there are pretty horrible withdrawal symptoms.  For over a month I was fairly miserable as my body withdrew off the medicine and I still (now 2.5 months later) have some issues from it.
  • I don't want to scare you but my sister, who does not have any children, got the Mirena and she said it was the most painful thing she has ever done. She figures it was pretty close to what actual child birth feels like (her words). I assume she likes it now but she has definitely not forgotten the experience of having it put in.
