cordless under cabinet lighting

DH and I are trying to decide if we want to shell out the money for the builder to include under cabinet lighting in our kitchen.

DH swears we can get lights "just as good" at ikea or some 'big box' store that are cordless that screw into the bottom of our cabinets.

I've seen very few of these online (lots with chords... not so many without...) and the reviews aren't great.  (they are too blue, too dinky, not bright enough).

Do you have any personal suggestions?  Rants or Raves?

I know it's kind of a shot in the dark - but I figured it may be worth asking.

Re: cordless under cabinet lighting

  • We did ours from ikea lights, but unless you have a hidden outlet or can hardwire them, you still see the plug.  Had to drill into our cabinets also to hide most of the wires.  Not the most elegant solution so if you're building and have the chance to do it right, I'd do that.  The Ikea lights themselves (we have the round ones) are great though.

  • Hardwired under cabinet lights and non-hardwired lights are no comparison. Our last house we added them after (You can have them hardwired after, but it's $$ and a PITA so we didn't. Not worth it.) and this house we had the builder do it and it was worth every penny. Unless you look at the underside of the cabinets you don't even know they are there until I flip the switch. There are also no signs of them inside the cabinets- no holes, no screws, etc.

If you are getting dark coloured counter tops, definitely spring for the lights.
