eBay peeps

What are your feelings on second chance offers?

Generally they irk me.  Ebay says they're because the high bidder was unable to complete the transaction or because the seller had more than one item to sell, but that smells like B.S. to me considering how many times it's happened.  I am pretty sure that the seller, or a friend, was trying to up the bidding and then got stuck holding the bag (ha, in this case, literally since it's a tote) when the time ran out.  I don't want to buy it at the MAXIMUM bid I put in, considering I think that they're just being a shady a-hole.  Maybe if they offered it to me at a lower price than my max bid, I'd consider it, but it just feels like they're taking advantage of me and it pisses me off.

I'm not going to buy this item anyway, because without the thrill of the cheap deal I am logical enough to realize that my current laptop bag works just fine, particularly when I just bought another bag.  Maybe I'm even wrong, and there really are that many real bidders that flake out - which is ridiculous, why would you bid on something if you aren't committed to buy?  That should ban you from Ebay forever.

  • I think it's BS.

I used to use ebay a lot. I don't really use it anymore.

  • I go through eBay phases.  But I'm super picky about it when I do shop there.  I am also quick to report people who are doing obviously shady things.

  • Speaking from the seller's viewpoint, it depends on what kind of person/store/seller you're buying from.

For example, our eBay shirt store has tons of inventory, so we will offer EVERYONE a second chance offer b/c we have the inventory.  Personally, we price our items so that if they sell at the starting price, we are still making money.  That may be shady, but so be it, we gotta earn a living somehow.  And I do feel bad when a bid war went on and we sell a tee for $15.  But then again, the buyer CHOSE to enter that bid war.  The fact that they CAN get a second chance offer is something they need to be aware of and take the risk of a higher bid.

But if for example, you are buying from an individual, second chance offers irk me the same way as they do you.  I DO feel it's shady.  Granted, perhaps the first buyer did flake out, but I'm like you and don't even really want to pay my max bid.  You can message the seller after they've sent you the offer and counteroffer what you really DO want to pay.  It could work out, it could not, but at least you've asked.

You'd be surprised at how many people bid, win and don't pay.  Usually they are new to eBay (1 or 2 feedbacks), but still.  And now eBay has changed their rules so that sellers cannot leave negative feedback.  It's a crock of shiz IMO.

  • I agree with Brew.  Our company has an eBay store and we have so much crap that we're trying to get rid of so we offer the second chance thingie.

I'm really careful about purchasing on eBay.  I just bought some CR2032 batteries for my scale.  They only cost $2 with free shipping.  I figure if they don't work out I only paid $2 for them.

  • Brew - yeah, I'm talking about individual sellers, I should have pointed that out.  With a store I would assume that they have more stock, although I've never been in that situation with a store.  Since I usually browse around the store's items, I wouldn't think twice if that happened.  It didn't even occur to me to try to counteroffer, I will keep that in mind in the future.  Although, like I said, it kind of pisses me off if they were just trying to squeeze every last dollar out of me - I wish there was a way to REALLY know if someone truly didn't pay them.

It sucks that people really do flake (WTF?!) and I didn't realize that you can't leave negative feedback for buyers anymore.  I feel like you should be able to say that someone didn't pay, or took forever to pay.  Can you report them or something??  I am very careful about giving negative feedback, I always try to work it out with the seller first.

I don't think you should feel bad about either of these things - it makes sense that you sell for profit, and as a buyer I assume that that's the case.  And when bid wars happen, that's just part of the game.  I set my max bid, and if I choose to go higher that it's totally my choice - with a store like yours, a person should realize that you have more stock, and bid accordingly.  Even if it wasn't, that's just how bidding works.  Don't feel bad.

  • This thread made me wonder what kind of feedback, if any, I've gotten.  I'm so lame, I just went and checked.  I got lots of A+++++++++++++!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'s - people like getting money, there's not really much else that goes into it!

  • My personal eBay is 100% cuz I know how to work the system.  Duh, you like item, you commit, you pay, you get.  Brilliant!

Our store is at 100% too, only b/c we fight those negative peeps that leave it just out of spite.  It pisses me off to no end that we can't leave negative for buyers who don't pay.  I've complained mulitple times to no avail :(

And Laura, I don't feel too bad about our prices.  Half the time I don't keep up w/ our store and forget to list stuff :)

DH is obsessed with ebay.  He likes buying junkers and fixing them up - esp since he can't afford anything brand new.  But it irks me because sometimes you just get screwed.  He bought a Tahoe last Nov which turned out to have been in a flood and a lot of other damage/wear & tear that the seller didn't disclose.  I told him to get rid of it because I was sick of all the time/money he was putting into it.  It's been listed twice in the last month.  First time, buyer flaked & didn't pay.  Second time, we got scammed - guy from UK (we think) sent a bogus bank check for almost double the selling price so we'd 'pay for the shipping' with the other half of the money (via western union money wire).  um, no, thanks.

Some individual sellers require you have min feedback points in order to bid.  But, that doesn't stop people from creating dummy accounts just to get out of their own regretful bids.  It sucks the way some people play the system.
