Ugh... I wanna cry

My SIL has been watching our daughter for us since I went back to work (for about 4 weeks now).  She told me last night that she can't do it anymore.  She said can't get the things she needs to do around the house done (like laundry, grocery shopping, etc).  She's a stay at home mom and wife.

I'm heartbroken and feel betrayed in a weird way.  I wish she would have never agreed to it in the first place.  Now we are talking to other family members to see if they will watch her for us because I am so afraid to put her in day care.  I suppose that is a normal feeling for a mom.

Ugh.. sick over this whole thing.

  • Nicole, she'll be ok!  It's probably very stressfull since you (probably) didn't look before you went back to work since you didn't think you had to, and now you probably feel you're in a bind to find someone who's compatible and trustworthy while your schedule is packed.  Can any friends or coworkers give you recommendations?

  • I've been asking around, Munkii.  It's just scary taking her to someone I don't know and trust personally.

  • Oh, that is SO HARD.  My SIL is having a baby any day now and she's already having a hard time figuring out what she's going to do after maternity leave.  I'm sorry the situation changed... I can't imagine how upset I'd be.

My SIL is thinking about going down to part time so my brother can watch him one or two days and gramma can watch her the other day or two... is that something you might be able to do?  Or would SIL be willing to watch her less?  Maybe two or three days instead of five?  Then maybe another family member/day ccare could watch her the other two days?

If you lived up here, I'd quit my desk job and watch your little doll and my little nephew.  Smile  **HUGS**

  • I think every mom feels that way to an extent. It is scary leaving your little one with someone you've had no previous relationship with. I think if you do a bit of research you'll find there are great options in your area.

  • SO sorry you are having to deal with this.

We had some issues with my SIL who watches Liam after about a month also. We had agreed to a rate before I went back to work and then suddenly 4 weeks into it she upped her rate by 30% and changed her policies (we only paid her for days he was actually there, now she wants to be paid the same amount every week regardless)...apparently she had forgotten how much work an infant is (although I think she just got greedy...she is a single mother and we had figured she'd appreciate some extra cash, that was part of the reason we'd asked her to watch him).

We agreed to pay it because we honestly felt we had no other option at that point...but I totally understand the betrayed feeling you're having. We are keeping him with her until he is about a year/year and a half old (or we move and taking him there is no longer convenient), we figure he'll be ready for a more structured, educational environment at that point. Unfortunately, the whole thing has left a very sour taste in our mouths (mine and DH's) and we've been avoiding spending time with his family.

  • We are going to talk to one of my husband's sisters tonight to see if it is something she might be able to do for us.  I would really prefer for her to be watched by a family member but I have to roll with the punches.

    Thanks to everyone for listening!

Juangela, I'm sorry you are having challenges with the sitter situation too. It's hard!

  • I'm sorry but she's a jerkface.  Don't agree to something and then suddenly "change your mind".. And the fact that she's family makes her a bigger jerkface.  I'm sorry Nicole!  I hate that she's putting you in a bind.  You can fly that baby out here and I'll watch her during the week....and just fly her back on the weekends. Wink  Or I can just move in....

  • You poor thing!  I don't have kids but I can imagine how frustrating/upsetting this is for you.

Also I didn't see anyone else mention it, but if you guys belong to a church maybe you can post something up there.  When I was in high school, I babysat for a handful of families, and then a few of them went to the same church and threw my name out while they were w/ friends/family and that's how I got the referrals.  Hugs!!

  • The church recommendation reminds me, the JCC offers daycare and preschool, and they get great reviews from people I know (Catholics can use them too!).  I looked up the JCC in Irvine and, I know this is short notice, but they're having an info session tomorrow at 10am.

  • Thanks for the rec Munkii.... It's a little far from my home/work but I will definitely keep it in mind.
