How to set up a pediatrician?
I'm looking for a good pediatrician in Warwick/ EG who will can have same day sick visits and is recommended.
I've called Ocean State Pediatrics twice and I was told that all drs. are accepting new patients, but can't even fit me in for a consult. I was told that the hospital would just call when the baby is delivered and whatever doctor will just "show up."
Is this really how it works? I was hoping to at least talk to someone about my high-risk pregnancy and get some guidance about what formula to start with, etc.
Re: How to set up a pediatrician?
I'm not sure how it works. When I had DS, I called the office to confirm they were accepting new patients and pick my pediatrian. Never thought about a consult, since good friends used her and really liked her. I had to add pediatrician name to paperwork at the hospital, and during delivery another doctor happened to be on call (since they rotate). My pediatrician did do rounds in the morning and came to check on DS, and did his discharge papers.
Not sure what questions you had regarding your high-risk pregnancy, but I would think that your OB would take care of that. If it's in regard to the baby being delivered early, I'm sure you're OB would be able to answer those questions as well. I was high risk, and went into pre-term labor at 34.5 weeks - my OB answered all of my questions. As for formula guidance, I would think that the nurses at the hospital would take care of that. I'm pretty sure they don't have too many options at the hospital - probably just enfamil or similac.
Good luck!
What? They won't even let you meet with the doctors before you make a decision for them to care for your new baby? That is annoying. Honestly there are two secretaries there who are just not overly friendly or helpful. I'm sorry that you haven't gotten anywhere. Could you ask to speak with a nurse or even a doctor when you call? And at that point ask if you can schedule a consult with a doctor - rather than straight out asking the secretaries?
As far as the hospital part; that is correct, whatever doctor is on call at the hospital each day that you're there is the one that will check in on the baby. It's really not a big deal - they are all really nice, so not to worry!
Good luck - I do love all of the doctors at the practice, and most of the nurses are great as well. They are awesome for fitting you in for same day sick visits. I hope you're able to meet with someone so you can feel comfortable with your decision.
Hmmm.. they can't fit you in? I agree with Kristen, the front office staff can sometimes seem like they can't be bothered. Overall I am thrilled with our choice of Pediatricians. They are a great group of Dr's and Nurses. We have never had an issue of same day sick visits. We always got in right away.
Good Luck!
I got the same response when I called Ocean State as well. I ended up calling Tollgate Pediatrics based on the recommendations of some of the ladies on here. I met with Dr. Ammar and decided right then that she would be our pediatrician. I didn't have to let them know I had chosen them. Just had to let the hospital know when we got there. Then their on call dr saw my son while we were there. So far, I really like them. Have only been for a few visits but the nurses and front desk staff are really nice.
We use Ocean State Pediatrics and got the same story when I called to schedule a consult. I had previously met with someone at Rhode Island Pediatrics and did not like them at all. I figured even if I couldn't meet the pediatrician she had to be better then the other place and if I really didn't like them I could change.
That all being said ... so far Ocean State has been awesome! Our doctor is Dr. Noel and she is wonderful. They are great at phone calls and fit us right in for a sick visit.
Oh and as far as the birth/pediatrician thing goes. Basically when you are admitted they ask you who your pediatrician is. There is always one of the their doctor's on call and that doctor will initially see the baby when they are born. However, before we were discharged from the hospital we did meet with Dr. Noel.

I switched from Tollgate Pedi to EG Pedi recently, and we love Dr. Akins as well. They were happy to set up a consult for us. I got the same answer at Ocean State saying that they wouldn't do a consult with us and we just had to pick whoever...I wasn't happy with that because I wanted to actually meet the doctor who may be taking care of my children. The way I see it is that they don't get paid for their time during your consult from either you, or your insurance company so they don't want to give you the time out of their day...and to me, that just isn't right. Good luck with whomever you choose but I love Dr. Akins so far!
Also, They are open on weekends for sick visits. When you call the office with a question, your doctor actually calls you back directly, rather than speaking to a nurse, which I also love about this practice. The other really great thing about them is they don't group with other pedis in the area for weekend/night on call rotations, so if you call at night or on the weekend with a problem, you are only dealing with doctors from THIS office, rather than a doctor and an office you are unfamiliar with. Tollgate groups out with other practices so if you need to see a doctor on a weekend, its not always at their office. We've had to see many different pedis in different offices and also different doctors call you back at night, which I really didn't like.
I agree with the previous posts about East Greenwich Peds...we see Dr. Pogacar and have seen Dr. Atkins - both are fantastic.
The drs came to the hospital everyday when we were there and my daughter had some issues when she was born, so they had us come in daily to the office until they were resolved during her first 10 days or so. They even called us after hours to check on her to make sure she was doing better after an afternoon appt.
They set up a consult for DH and I after 5 (to fit with our schedule). I loved how they have so many opennings for sick visits, both on weekdays and on the weekends. The dr's are very good about follow ups, what is normal, what to be concerned about, etc. They came highly recommended from several people and I agree! Good luck
I'm not in RI, but my pedi office doesn't do pre birth visits either. I had picked out a pediatrician beforehand based on a recommendation, but after each child was born the on-call pedi was who came in and met with us. One time our chosen pedi was on before we were discharged, so we were able to meet with her.
I think it's pretty standard.
These responses have been so helpful.
It sounds like both Tollgate and EG Pedi are both options that would work well for us. I called Tollgate yesterday. The office staff sounded great and easy to work with, and based on the recommendations for Dr. Ammar, I'm definately willing to try them out.
Many thanks!
