I don't want to start a big, heated debate about this (I know this is a passionate subject for some), I just thought this approach was different and wondered about other's thoughts.

Just an FYI, in case you forgot/didn't know... healthcare is mandatory in MA & the premiums keep rising for those who don't qualify for the free/low cost plan.
Re: Healthcare twist
Do doctors really perform procedure that don't need to be done for the sake of making extra money?
Personally, it sounds like the new approach might make things worse, and people actually get worse care.
But then again, I am no healthcare expert. Sorry your rates are starting to raise

When I was living up there I was trying to help our marketing assistant get health insurance (she was contracting). I did the math, she would have been better off having the temp agency lower her rate by $0.50 and hour, then she would have qualified for some lower income insurance. The temp agency wouldn't do it, and it was going to cost her an additional $400 a month to get coverage. She decided to go without and hope she didn't get caught ... luckily she got hired in December, so it showed her having insurance at the end of the year.
As a side note, I was horrified at what the state of Massachusetts considered "low income." I forget the income levels now, but I remember wondering how the heck they come up with those numbers. Looking at the numbers I remember thinking no wonder some people choose not to work - the government was essentially penalizing people who were on the cusp by hitting them with crazy insurance rates.

Kathy- I don't know if they're performing extra procedures or not. That article was news to me too.
Personally, I haven't had any problems with the care I've needed (which was very minimal). No dr. of mine has run any extra tests that I know of.
A couple months ago, MH got conjunctivitis & went to the minute clinic at CVS. Our Blue Cross insurance only paid for $14 of the 'visit' & we had to pay about $50 out of pocket. I thought that was kind of silly. Had we known, DH would have made an appointment at his regular dr. and just paid the copay.
Aegis- Agreed. If we had a baby right now, our family plan insurance would be more than our mortgage. Something about that is a little off to me.
