Tax refunds

If you typically get a tax refund and you have done your taxes already do you find this year was about the same as last year? Were there any big differences in your refund?

Re: Tax refunds

  • ....so I asked this question after my tax lady sent me a msg saying that our refund was way way way less than it has been in the past. Turns out she missed a number and it's way more like I thought it would be...PHEW! I literally almost had a heart attack! Yay for refunds!
  • We already have our money, the state we got last week and the federal we got today!

The last couple years we have owed, we are now in a higher tax bracket, but having Emmy helped :)

  • It was a little more then last year but we got to take all our medical off so that helped some.

  • The first year we were married we owed 2000! Plus a few months later we got a notice since DH didn't change his address to TN we owed Va state taxes when he worked down there that was another 1000.  The next year we still owed 1000+.  Last year was better and we did get a bit of a refund but since DH is basically self employed we just applied that money towards the next quarterly taxes.  Hopefully we will be able to do the same this year.  I was so used to getting money back in college this was a bit of a shock to the system.

  • we're getting less back. our goal is to owe, not be owed. we'd rather have to give to them, than the government hold on to our money all year. there's always a chance they won't have it to give to us and we don't want to pay taxes on something we've already paid taxes on (you pay taxes on your refund)

we got our federal back yesterday. around $300 and will hopefully get state back soon. (not sure how much that will be)

it's all going straight to our emergency fund :)

  • We're getting quite a large one back compared to normal so I think we need to look into changing our deductions. I think because our property taxes went up and I paid more student loan interest that affected it.  Also, we changed our deductions to withhold more last year as we owed and I think we did it wrong.  I'd rather not be giving the government my money as it's basically an interest free loan to them. I'm putting it all towards my student loans this year. The quicker I can pay those off the closer I am to getting to stay home!
  • We just did ours tonight, and I can't wait for this refund. Thanks to putting in new energy efficient windows and a new front door, plus the working credit, our refund is our biggest yet. Yay for tax credits!!
  • Ours was a little less than last year, but not much. It's mostly already gone. We paid off my car and DH's John Deere.

Lauren, I SO wish we could hang on to more of ours throughout the year. It would make a big difference in our monthly income, but due to DH's job we can't really adjust ours any more. Sometimes we end up owing different states depending on where he works.
