Call me judgemental...

...but I don't think a pregnant woman should ever drink beer. Period.

A guy ordered a pitcher of Blue Moon tonight with 3 glasses. Well, I didn't see the other two people until a few minutes later. One of that was at least 7 months pregnant. And I'm positive it was only the 3 of them, so the glass had to be for her.

Yick. I felt terrible.

Is one allowed to not serve alcohol to a pregnant woman? Techonically it's not against the law (not that I'm aware of at least).

  • Its not Against the law but they shouldn't be drinking. Should have slapped her!

Although I saw that they were doing research about woman drinking while pregnant. It just seems so Wrong To me...

  • I was reading one of the emails I get from the nest about "pregnancy myths busted!!" or something like that.  Drinking during pregnancy was one of them, but they suggested no more than one drink, and described it in terms of a "few celebratory sips of champagne" or something like that.

I can see myself taking a few sips champagne for celebration, or tasting a friends wine, but drinking a full pint of beer, or a shot of whisky just seems dangerous to me.

  • I agree.  I think some pregnant women read the studies about drinking during pregnancy and see it as a license to drink what they want even though most studies that say it is "okay" have strict limits on what you should drink.

  • Beer on a random night out, no I wouldn't do that while pregnant.

However, like pp's said, I could see drinking a small glass of wine or champagne for a celebratory occassion.

  • Was this at a bar?  I'm really hoping it was a restaurant.  A pregnant woman has no business being at a bar in the first place.  Blah!

If you're judgmental then I'm with you!

  • I dunno, just because they got the girl a glass doesn't mean she filled it and drank it.  Did you see her pound down a pint, or did you just see them carry off the glasses? Maybe she had just a little, or maybe she just wanted to hold a beer and didn't drink any at all. I had a very pregnant friend order a beer once when we were hosting an event simply because she wanted to order a beer. She took a sip, and passed it over to me.

I can't get all worked up over a pregnant woman wanting a glass of beer. A pint or more every day? Sure, that's a bit nuts. But studies have shown that a minimal amount of alcohol isn't harmful. And anyone who uses that knowledge to justify drinking more excessively than that during pregnancy was probably going to do so anyway.

  • I have nothing to add, but I just rememberd a scene from The Simpson's where something is going on with Bart, and Homer blames it on the sip of alcohol that Marge had while she was pregnant.  They do a "flashback" to the christening of a ship they were at and the champagne bottle breaks and one drop of champagne flies into Marge's mouth.  lol  Immediately you see fetus-Bart looking all sweet and ...fetal... and then the drop of champagne hits him and the music from The Omen starts playing and the top of his head gets all pointy like it is today.  It was pretty damned funny.

  • I'd give her the sticky-eyeball too.  Hopefully she was just going to have a taste, not a pint, but I don't know if you can not serve based on pregnancy.

I think having a mimosa at your baby shower would be okay, however I don't really like mimosas (or any alcohol particularly), so it's not something I'd need to "give up" for pregnancy.  I regularly go months without any alcohol, so pregnancy would be an even easier "I can't drink, I'm pregnant" excuse :)

  • When I went on my lunchbreak to visit, the day that Peanut was being born, there was a girl near the entrance, HEAVILY pregnant, smoking right under the "No Smoking" sign.  I cringed.

The next day, when I went to visit after Peanut had been born, that same girl was there, outside, smoking in the same spot.

I couldn't believe it, actually.  You can't even not-smoke long enough to give birth and be in the hospital for one day???

I came back to work and was talking about it.  The girl who works for me (who does also smoke) said that her sister was the same way.  The sister couldn't wait more than 30 minutes for a cigarette the whole time she was in labor.  The girl who works for me said that even she was disgusted by that.

Brooke, What's wrong with a pregnant woman being in a bar?

I play trivia at a bar every Tuesday and when I get pregnant, I don't plan on stopping that just because I have a big belly. I won't be drinking, but I will be hanging out and having a good time. It's going to be bad enough when the baby comes and is too young to have a sitter.

As for drinking, no doctor wants to be the one to say drinking is okay because they don't know how much causes fetal alcohol syndrome and other birth defects. I don't plan on drinking while pregnant, but I will probably taste some of the different beers Nick likes to try and might have a celebratory sip of wine/champagne at a friend's wedding.

Do they still allow smoking in bars where you live?  That would be my main concern.

  • Nope, no smoking indoors or we wouldn't go there. Nick had cancer 2 years ago so we steer clear of anyplace with smoking and such that cause him to have a higher risk of getting it again. I wish everywhere would pass this law. I hate indoors smoking.

  • I am going to play devil's advocate for a minute.  Is it possible that she was already full-term and was trying to induce labor?  Beer is supposedly thought to be labor inducing.

Also, I do plan on drinking while pregnant.  Not in excess, of course.  And not regularly.  But I LOVE wine and I do plan to have one glass now and then.  Of course, I am sure there are those who will say that I am horrible for putting my baby at risk, but I have read a TON of research on the subject, and while there have not been concrete resolutions that it is okay for women to drink, every single study I have read shows that there is no harm in an occasional glass.  I actually have a friend whose doctor required her to drink one glass of wine each night.  She is a high-strung person and he said that she needed it for the health of her baby.

Is beer a different story?  Yeah, I kind of think it is.  But I'm just going to believe that she's trying to go into labor because otherwise I do kind of think it's a little trashy.

ETA: I also plan to drink a cup of coffee every morning.  Flame away.  My baby may be born with two heads!

  • I have to concur with the other ladies who asked whether or not you actually saw her drinking a glass of beer?  It's very likely that she was just there to hang out, and I don't see a problem with a pregnant woman hanging out in a bar just to hang out with some friends.  If I'm invited out to spend time with friends and they want to go to a bar, I'm going to go.  I don't think being pregnant should be viewed as an affliction and you have to keep from certain establishments.

As Erin stated, some alcohol is okay during pregnancy.  Typically, it's just a class of wine or something.  I'm not sure of the guidelines surrounding beer, but I have to think just a small bit isn't terribly harmful if a glass of wine isn't.  I don't drink, never really have been a drinker, but I can't sit back and judge someone without knowing full-well that she was sitting there downing a pitcher of beer.  Just my two-cents.

Oh, Erin, you can totally have your cup of coffee. My doctor said I'm allowed 1-2 servings of caffeine daily.  No worries! :)

Yes, I guess maybe I've been scarred from my experiences in the past with the bar/club scene.  In my head I was picturing a crowded smoky bar, which I personally don't believe a pregnant woman should be hanging out at.  A restaurant/sports bar establishment with no smoking is a different story.

Also, even just from reading about Tisha's recent post about her off duty officer friend who was critically injured because of a bar fight has made me even more leery.

Thank god. I was wondering how I'd make it through with nothing for 9 months.

(My boss and I were in Dunks one morning when she was 8 months pregnant.  She ordered a decaf, but apparently the super nosy woman behind us didn't hear, because she said, "you're drinking coffee? and you're pregnant!?"   My boss smiled and said, "that's nothing - wait til I add the kahlua when I get back to my office." )

  • As far the alcohol and coffee goes I think it really depends on practice that you are with. My dr and midwife both said no caffeine and no alcohol, while one of my good friends that was pregnant at the same time was told by her dr that she could have a serving of coffee a day as well as a glass of wine a week.

I personally was a bit earthy crunchy when I was pregnant and chose not to drink either one.

And Erica your boss's response was awesome.

  • My mom was a party animal 19 year old when she was pregnant with me and also didn't know she was pregnant until she was almost 5 months along. To say that she didn't drink would be a complete lie, and I turned out ok. I am still too early to do a test and just drank a beer with my wings and also drank on vacation, if/when I find out I am pregnant I will stop drinking but I am not going to not have a life at all while trying.

I know girls that had a glass of wine a week (also ok'd by their doctors) and their babies are fine. I don't agree with smoking while pregnant (or at all), but that is just my opinion.

I don't see anything wrong with hanging out with friends in a bar either, just because you are there does not mean that you are doing anything wrong.

I am going to try to give up caffeine but I know that I will have to give it up slowly or I will get major headaches, not to mention be completely unbearable.

  • Gaaah I've been at work all day!

I work at a movie theatre that sells beer & wine.
Techonically, I did not physically see her drink. However, I saw her pour from the pitcher, and I am 100% sure that it was only 3 of them (3 people, 3 glasses).

I guess I just don't see why you would want to risk it, even if everything turns out fine. Like, I don't drive after I drink a beer...I'm super paranoid about that (but I am a crazy light weight).

DH's mom smoked while she was pregnant and he's totally fine. I get that it can be fine, but is a blue moon worth the risk?

    Interesting opinions from everyone, though!

  • I get where you coming from.  And I don't think that anyone here would be disagree with you that it would be offensive and maddening if she were drinking excessively. The thing is, a whole lot of research has been done over the past 10 years.  And the risk is believed to be almost non-existent for light drinking.  It's not just that it can be fine, but it is fine.  Studies of the effects of alcohol on fetuses have only shown damage with binge drinking.  Here's a great article on a recent study.http://news.discovery.com/human/alcohol-drinking-pregnant-women.html

I agree though that it is weird to see a pregnant woman drinking. I think that's mostly because many of us were raised with the belief that you shouldn't drink when you are pregnant.  So I am not saying you were wrong to feel that way.  Just that it is likely that what she was doing was completely fine.

Well, Blue Moon IS a damn good beer...

(I kid. I can understand why you'd think it was a bad idea. I don't happen to agree, provided homegirl didn't drink the entire pitcher, but I can understand where you're coming from.)
