Is this bad?

This is going to sound really stupid, but I'd like to know your thoughts anyway.

At our TH, according to the rules, there are no assigned parking spots.  When we first moved in, our neighbors (more than once) informed us as to where they regularly park even though there are no 'spots'.

Okay.  Even though I thought the parking spots were unfair, no big deal.

Someone came yesterday to take our neighbor's car away (the one who passed) & now her spots open.  It's a better spot than mine.  Would it be wrong/weird/disrespectful... whatever... to park there so soon?  Her companion has been staying at his daughter's house since her death & I don't know when he'll be back.

I also don't want to miss out on the spot if my other neighbor has the same idea as me & moves in first.

I'm sorry if this sounds so stupid, but I've been thinking about since she passed Embarrassed

  • Tough one. I think I would park there.  I might leave a note on your neighbors door that when he gets back to let you know, like maybe something along the lines that you wanted to check in on him and see how he is doing and if he needed anything.  Then you will know when you have to give back the spot and you're being nice at the same time.

  • The wake is tomorrow & I'm planning on going very briefly.  Go in, say sorry & leave.  DH is working, so I'll be alone.

He has his own spot, which is the best one in the lot.  His car is still there.

  • Just park there.  It's open, free parking, so park wherever you want.  People might have some feathers ruffled, but FFS it's just a parking lot.

  • Wasn't your neighbor like 80?  I'm terrified that she even had a car.  I'd park there.
  • Was it the older couple that told you those were "their spots"?  Do your other neighbors do the same thing?  If spots aren't assigned, they're not assigned.

    I'd park there.

  • Dear Feather Ruffler,

I know.  I partially agree.  When we first moved in, that was my attitude.  Eff them.  I'll park where I damn please.  But, they are the nicest neighbors & have been very pleasant/curteous since we've lived there.  They're also old (he's 92) & I want to be respectful.  The rest of our neighbor's can suck it for all I care.

  • ChangeofPace- lol.  She was 78.  He's 92.  But surprisingly, he has all his wits about him.  He's not one of those elderly people that shouldn't be driving.  As for her, I don't know... he did most of the driving.

Aegis- When we first moved in, another neighbor first told us about the parking situation (rather rudely).  Then they (the 92 & 78 y/o) repeated it to us (more nicely this time), saying the other neighbors would get upset if we disrupted the parking spots.

I know, it's just a parking spot.  But I do have some guilt parking there.

Wow, he drives too?  It's hard to imagine a 92 year old with decent reflexes.  That is beside the point though.  I don't think you should feel guilty at all.  It's just a parking space.  If it makes you feel better, wait until after the wake to start using it.  I think the nicest thing you can do in this lady's rememberance is check in on her partner when he comes back to stay there.

    Maybe I'll do this.

I would see them every morning when I left for work.  They would go to Mass everyday then go to the Senior Center.  I hope he continues to do this.

I think it says a lot about you as a person that you are trying to be so considerate and have given so much thought to a neighbor you lived next to for less than a year.  I am sure that her interactions with you brightened some of her days.

Thank you.  I try to make it a point to be as considerate as possible.
