Natural Cleaners

In order to save money, I have been researching natural home cleaners (kitchen, bathroom tub, window, laundry cleaners, etc).  I am still curious if these cleaners actually work though.  There are a lot of different types of homemade cleaners for the same type of surfaces you want to clean...I'm not sure which to use or if they even work.  Does anyone have any experience with making their own cleaners and want to share?  Can you give me your recipes you've used?

 Thanks!

Steph

Re: Natural Cleaners

  • I use vinegar and water for most things now.  I know some people use hydrogen peroxide and water mix for bathrooms.  Baking soda is a good "scrubber".  I also have shaklee products my MIL got us...they also last forever and work well.
  • I use vinegar a lot.  I also use Seventh Generation.  You can google homemade cleaning products and you can get some recipes.
  • I use a 50/50 vinegar/water mix for most 'spray and wipe' type cleaning. It works really well on mirrors and windows. I use it for bathroom and kitchen cleaning, too. You can also save money by not using paper towels and using microfiber cloths instead. I also use vinegar as my fabric softener now. That's a huge price difference and it's better for our clothing/towels, etc.

  • I also use mostly 50/50 vinegar water solution for bathrooms, wiping down kitchen counters and my DS toys. I love using a mixture of salt and baking soda on my tub and shower then rinse with boiling water...never seen such a sparkling tub! Sometimes I use 7th generation. Vinegar on my windows and mirrors wiping it down with newspaper works really well too! You'll save a bundle if you make your own. The only thing I can't seem to get down is the fabric softner, I use vinegar in the FS compartment but my clothes are always full of static.
  • I like experimenting with essential oils in my natural cleaners. Lavender and Tea Tree Oil both have some wonderful antibacterial/antifungal properties. I also use a lot of vinegar, lemon juice, and baking soda. I've also heard good things about Borax and Washing Soda.
