Nonclicky poll: How much did your prom dress cost?

I'm reading on other boards that prom dresses go for $300-$500 now!  That seems cah-razy to me!

So how much did you spend on yours?

Re: Nonclicky poll: How much did your prom dress cost?

  • Mine was $75 on a clearance rack at Dillards and I found it like the week before prom.  Oops.

I'm trying to find a picture online now of something similar.  It was niiiiice.

  • Surprise That is insane!

My prom dress was a short simple black dress that I found on the clearance rack for $30.  I think the most I ever spent (or my parents) spent on a dress for a dance was for my 1st winter formal.  It was a dark green velvet material that went off the shoulder and cost $130.  At the time I thought that was way overly priced, but since it was my first dance my mom wanted me to have something special.

  • Eek, I don't remember that far back! Plus, since my mom bought it, I don't think it stuck with me how much it cost. Maybe $80-$130?

That's insane for prom dresses. My wedding dress was only $350!

  • Mine was about $80 and we bought it in the garment district in downtoan l.a. (read cheap place for dress shopping).  I loved it.  Someone offered to buy it from me a couple weeks later but I said no.  Now it's soooo not in style heh.

ETA: The back of it is forever immortalized in the Clive Barker movie Lord of Illusions (I wore it when I was an extra).

  • I want to say all of my formal dresses were between 100-150... and I proceeded to re-wear all of them for sorority formals. and I had to pay for them with my $$ from work.

Since I was heavier in HS, I never could find anything in the clearance rack or the teen section at stores, and had to go to Davids Bridal or other formal stores to find larger sizes.

  • Mine was $130 I think and it's still hanging in the closet at my mom's. Hmmmm...I wonder if I could still fit into it. lol Honestly, I wouldn't wear it again, but I could. It was just a simple, long black dress from Cache.

  • $25 on one of those crazy clearance racks at Dillards.  I bought it for my Junior prom but ended up not going, so I wore it to Senior prom.  I loved it so much.  I totally have a PIP, that's how much I love it.

  • Hmmm...my phone must have eaten my response. My dress was $220. I looked forever and had a lot of trouble finding something I liked so when the one I liked turned out to be that expensive my mom splurged. I thought that was way to much to spend at the time and we looked in some other stores but my mom insisted on going back and getting it. I still have it, not that I'd ever wear it now.

ETA: I got my wedding dress on major clearance at $350 so I think that redeems the high cost prom dress. Wink

  • You looked very pretty!

Now I HAVE to find a picture of mine.  I was such a hussy.  I have no idea how my mom let me and my 16yo 34D boobs wear it.

Mine was from Cache also. It was not simple/black though...it was hot pink!

  • Junior Prom was about $100 from Dillards and Senior Prom was $40 from a consignment shop. I bought them with my own money from work.

  • I honestly can't remember anything about my senior prom dress, but I'm sure it was less than $100.

There are only 2 formal dresses I really remember... my 8th grade Snow Frolic dress which was crushed garnet velvet with a white organza off-shoulder wrap-top piece and a crystal/pearl drop from the middle of my boobs. The other was sophomore cotillion, which was a slinky black floorlength dress with side slits and a 2-foot silver glitter dragon on the bottom by the slit. . . . It's no wonder I struggle with fashion...

  • My mom still has our picture on her fridge. Here it is:image

I crack up every time I look at this. Oh, and yes, that is DH.

ETA: Ahhh! I finally figure out how to PIP and I can't figure out how to make it smaller. Sorry!

Oh, and the back was the pretty part. It splits in the back and has the beading all down the split.

  • Haha. We're missing an awesome PIP opportunity with some of these replies!

Bahahahahahaha!!!  I remember the dragon craze.  I had a couple of shirts with giant slinky dragons across them.

Yes  Please tell me you still own this.

  • Okay, just broke out the yearbook.  Here's 16yo LB and her HS boyfriend:

    image

The back was MUCH sluttier.  It was an open corset with skinny string things for ties.  I tried to google a picture of what it looked like but all I got was lingerie and porn.

I also just took a lovely little stroll down LB-as-a-size-6 memory lane.

I don't care if it's exact, but please for the love of god PIP something similar.  I'm begging you.

Right there with ya. I cringe at the thought of trying to get that dress on again.

OMG, Jen, my prom dress was "asian-inspired" also. haha!

  • I googled "asian-inspired prom dress" and was all ready to laugh and this was one of the first images.  I'm not laughing.

Sooooo not my dress....mine was navy blue. ;)

  • Mine was a $300 Jessica McClintock dress. I have it in my closet with the hope that one day I'll be a size 2 again because I still love this dress! A girl can dream, right?

  • I think mine was $50.  I got it from Sears and I hated it.  Oh well.

  • So it's bothering me on an I'm-usually-good-at-finding-crap-on-the-internet kind of way, but I can't find ANYTHING even remotely close to my awesome dragon dress.

The picture on this shirt is similar to the dragon design (as I remember it from 11 years ago anyway), except it was bigger, and made of silver glitter. The dress itself was basically a long camisole with side slits to the knees. haha

This was mine exactly, Dillards clearance for $75.
  • Mine was around $300.  I never actually expected my parents to buy it for me because money was extremely tight (which is an understatement- we were poor lol), but they knew how much I loved it and surprised me.  I think I only went to one other dance in high school, and I had to borrow an old dress from a friend for that one so to actually have my own gown for prom made me feel like a million bucks lol.
