Amellis, re: TWC OBGYN (long)

To be clear, this is the office I dislike:  http://www.trinity-womenscare.com/

This was my personal experience in 2008/9.  Some of the staff may have changed, and I'm not sure if Dr. Haag is still there.  So take this FWIW - my experience will never be yours.  You may have a totally different opinion.

Even though I voiced many of these complaints (verbally and in a letter after DD was born), I was constantly told that once they moved to the new office things would be much better.  I went to 3 or 4 appts. at the new office and things never were better, but maybe they are now.  IDK. I would have left earlier, but on the promise that things would be better, I stayed.  Also, after 30 weeks it's difficult to switch doctors.

Mostly, the complaints stem from the staff/nurses, who may or may not be there anymore.

1.  My wait time was never less than 90 minutes.  For OB or GYN.  I quit showing up at my appt. time and would come in 30 to 60 minutes late, because I knew I would never be seen anywhere near my appt. time.  Even if it was the first appt. of the day.  Some days, I would check-in and leave to go grocery or Target shopping, drop the stuff off at home and then go back to wait another 30 mins. for my appt.  Ridiculous.  And like you, I was commuting from Tampa (downtown in my case) so I was leaving work early, commuting to the office, waiting a jillion years, and then getting home late.

Also, their scheduling clerk was a biatch and a half.  Everything was ::sigh:: this, ::huff:: that, and generally being disagreeable about every request.

2.  The reception areas are right on top of the reception desk.  I could hear everyone checking in, the nurses discussing everyone and their mother's vaginas, hear bill/insurance disputes and other nonsense I don't want to know (like how one nurse doesn't have any $ in her checking account and couldn't pay her babysitter).  Highly unprofessional and in violation of HIPAA.  I didn't appreciate hearing about others' problems, and I certainly didn't want my file discussed in front of a waiting room full of women/men/families.

3.  The nurses and doctors didn't test for some things I would have preferred, but didn't know were available until after the fact and it was too late.  They also gave me another patient's STD results, which were positive for a handful of STDs.  Only after a minor freak-out on my part did the nurse double-check SSNs and confirm that some results were misfiled.

4.  At my first PG appt., it took three nurses to stick me.  Three!  I am not the easiest, but I also am not that difficult.  I had blood drawn four times in the last 3 months and no one had to stick me more than once.

5.  Nurses' attitudes.  I get that nursing for some people is just a job.  But you shouldn't convey that attitude to your patient.  Being rude, dismissive, refusing to relay messages or questions to the doctor(s), and just motioning and grunting you to the bathroom/exam room, when that is your job, is just not professional.

6.   The wait time once in the exam room was also hella long.

7.  At delivery, both Dr. D and Dr. H were in surgery "assisting each other" on a c-section.  Dr. H came down and said, "Oh, just a normal vaginal birth?  Okay."  He ran off and Dr. D came down to assist w/delivery.  Maybe he's better at c-sections or is afraid of vaginas.  IDK.  But what I would've liked was an explanation such as, "Oh, just a normal vaginal birth?  Dr. D has done thousands of these, and I'm handling a complicated repair in surgery.  I will send her down right away."

8.  While everything in your crotch is generally a wreck for a few weeks, I kept feeling something "weird" when I could finally wash/wipe and the swelling had gone down.  I went back in and saw a midwife who said Dr. D sewed up my tear wrong, which had to be repaired.

9.  After my 6 week checkup (which was included in my insurance coverage for the pregnancy), I left.  I tried getting copies of my files transferred to my new GYN's office, but after three faxes and six phone calls, it has never happened and I suspect it never will.

To say I am displeased is an understatement.

With all of that said, I did really enjoy Dr. Haag and Dr. Dinsmore was always nice and pleasant.  Rachel, a midwife there, is amazing and I loved her to bits.  Very encouraging and reassuring, and willing to double check anything to ease your mind.  Also, their office is around the corner from my house (and next to the cupcake place!), so that made it convenient.  My new doctor is farther, but worth the drive to never experience that again.

  • Sorry, to butt in here... but that's terrible.  I'd be more than p*ssed too.

  • My OB's office has a crazy wait before appointments.  I have waited two hours before, no joke.  Nothing makes me madder than wasting my time in a waiting room.

    Baby Macy is here!

  • Dr. H isn't there anymore, and maybe a bunch of the other staff is gone, too.  I don't think Rachel is there - I've only met two MW so far, Gaye and a new lady Sheryl.  I think they moved their office, too.  Was it on Little Rd. before?  Because if they have no cupcake anywhere near there now!  Just a Dunkin' Donuts and a Wendys.

I can say that I have never had to wait that long for my name to be called, but that might of been with the old staff.

I can say that the reception area is one thing I have noticed.  I just try not to hear anything.  I've never had anything mixed up, but like I said it's only been one (or two?) appts.

Thanks for letting me know all this stuff, though.  I will keep an eye/ear out for everything and make sure that none of this happens.

Number 7 is just weird.  Why would you say that near someone?  Esp. a woman in labor! And then not to explain it?  I guess it's good that he is not with Dr. D's practice anymore.  I think I will already have Dr. D and Sheryl at delivery for DDs, because she mentioned in the last appointment that Sheryl would be delivering and Dr. D would do something else, I don't remember right now, but she'd be there.  If I can have a vaginal delivery (I was told I have an excellent pelvis, so really, according to them, it depends on how baby a is presenting and that we are all in good health at delivery.)

  • Yes, they were on Little Road before, but the new office is where you've seen them.

I hope, for their sake, they have made some changes.  IMO, Dr. H was a superior doctor than Dr. D, but I think they were just so different (odd couple-ish) that a practice together wasn't working out so well.  If he is still in the area, you may have him at the hospital since they used to cover each other when necessary (even before he joined Dr. D's practice).

FTR, they told me the midwife would be at the hospital, and she was not, so be prepared for that.

    Where are you delivering?

  • Dr. D said that she delivers at UCH NPR and at Helen Ellis. So I think I will go with Helen Ellis. IDK for sure, yet, though. And thanks for the cupcake map, lol :)
  • It's not even a mile away.  ;)  And really, you're splitting it 3 ways, right?
