I'm taking these challenges from Josip Novakovich's Writing Fiction Step By Step. It's a pretty good book:
Write two or three pages of a dinner conversation. Intersperse the descriptions of the activities around the table and the body language of the diners with the dialogue. You might choose two characters from a piece of fiction you're currently writing, or even characters from different stories.
Purpose: To use dinnertime as a conversation starter. Dinner is a good reflection on how we live, what we do, what we are up to; the context of dinner can help your dialogue immensely. Here you already have a resovoir of body language, manners and images.
Check: Do you have interesting dialogue? No matter what your purpose is in having a dialogue, it should be interesting, engaging. Many people, after all, during dinner, want to be entertaining - perhaps they tell jokes or boat or confide or interrogate or quarrel.
