Talk to me about flying with baby!!!

We are taking a last min trip with DH to CA for work. How do I do this with the carseat and mega-stroller?! DH is worried about gate checking because of how they handle (throw!) the strollers.

What are your traveling with babies tips??

Re: Talk to me about flying with baby!!!

  • they do throw strollers! do you have an umbrella stroller? you might want to buy a cheap one for the trip or just to have chicco makes good ones as is the babies r us brand mcclaren is expensive, but good. you will use it eventually.

i bought a carseat bag and i check them.

how fun!!! i stopped going on work trips after isla came along :( but i fully intend on participating again! :)

  • We have a big (beautiful, but BIG) Phil & Ted jogging stroller. I do have an old umbrella stroller...maybe I should just take that.

Does the convertable carseat fit in a carseat bag? I'll have to go get one today at BRU.

  • That's going to be so much fun!!

When we took JJ on his first trip we bought one of these:

    http://www.amazon.com/Go-Go-Babyz-QRKIDZ-Kidz-Travelmate/dp/B000JJK9EY

It just attached to the back of his carseat and we wheeled him through the airport. He thought it was the funniest thing b/c he could see all the people behind us!  We bought a bag for the stroller and checked that in with luggage; it was fine when we got it back.   The only time we had to disassemble the carseat from the Go Go Babyz was when we went through security and when we were literally getting on the plane.  It was super easy to attach to the carseat, and we thought it was a good investment b/c we'll continue to fly with him.

    Good luck!!

  • yes the bag fits a convert. car seat- its what we have. we always check the stroller at the gate.

i see the babies in the carseats with wheels and those look great! my kids would never! they hate the car seat. then again, neither of mine love the stroller either to be honest!

i think if you dont want to be bothered with the hassel big stoller you would be fine with the umbrella and just check at the gate. if you guys are going for a long time, and love the big one , maybe try what angela suggested.

good luck so fun! i remember those days of travel- how quickly they changed!

  • Do you have a seperate seat for her?  If not and you are not planning on taking the carseat on the flight then I would check the car seat and you might want to consider wearing her through the airport and checking her stroller too.  Going through security with a stroller is a bit of a PITA, you will have to take her out and carry her through while they check out the stroller.   When I flew with M she was still in her bucket so I brought the travel system to use through the airport and gate checked the stroller and brought the bucket on the plane.  We flew Southwest and they were very good with kids, when I got off the plane the stroller was waiting for me all set up!   Good Luck!

  • Our method with an infant riding in lap (with 2 of them we have done various stages):

    1. Use whatever stroller you will want on the other end. Buy a stroller bag for it. Gate check it. Our jogging stroller has been on many, many flights just fine b/c it's gate checked in a bag. I personally like having my big stroller on the other end if I'm doing any walking at all.

    2. Gate check the car seat in a car seat bag. Keeps it clean and safe from tears and rips. Gate checking ensures it isn't lost. If you're flying with your husband, get the bag w/ backpack straps. Jerred just straps the bag on and we're good to go with baby in stroller and the carseat on his back nice and comfy.

    3. Bjorn/Ergo/Something for getting on/off the plane. Baby is always in one of these once we get to the gate so that we can fold up stroller into bag, and plus have hands free to get onto the plane itself.

That's it. Just have a good nursing cover up for the airport & plane (or bottles if you prefer, Maddy won't take one so I'm stuck) and you're all set! A few of her fav toys, maybe something new, and you're off!

Oh, and BTW - we travel with cloth diapers too so if you want tips on that send me a msg on FB! :-)

  • No, we don't have a seperate seat for her. She is in the convertable carseat so I think we will just get a bag and check that. I plan to wear her in the Ergo throughout the airport. She isn't much of a stroller girl anyway. I think I will bring an umbrella stroller instead of our regular stroller (which is rarely used) unless DH wants to take the jogger. He seems to love that heavy a!s stroller ;)

I am hoping she will sleep on the plane, but she is so wiggly now and always wants to crawl and walk. She is such a good baby so I'm not too worried....just nervous to do something new!!

I also hate thinking about all the n-a-s-t-y germs! yuck!!

  • embrace the germs, you don't have much choice. She will attempt to chew and suck on every surface. She will likely get sick as a result of the travel. It's ok. She'll be ok!

  • When going through security see if they have a family/special needs line.  There was one in Orlando and they were super helpful with us!
  • i bring the wet ones sanitizing wipes in the red container. just wipe down the arm rests and trays windows etc. it was easier when they were that little. now they run everywhere and touch everything so i can clean everything!

  • HEY

as the wife of one of the "them" that "throw" things, NOT always what happens.  Gate checked stuff goes on last, which means when things shift under the plane it has nowhere to go but towards the last put in stuff.  However, there are some doodyheads who do toss things because they are young and dumb but they get yelled at.  I promise.  but I've never had any issues with any of the stuff I've gate checked.

I flew with K pretty much monthly/bi monthly from the time he was 6 months on.  It did kind of suck at that inbetween stage where they are trying to be independent but it was totally doable.

Just wipe down the seats, armrest, seat in front of you for sho

hehe - i'm convinced that my lack of wiping anything down, ever, is why my kids are fairly healthy. ;-) I mean we've had our fair share of colds and few ear infections but nothing major here.

Usually I could care less.  But for some reason I always do on a plane (I think because I consulted with Erin before the first time I flew and she stuck that in the list of things to do).  In any case... after dealing with SF we have yet to fly since that horrid horrid trip.  But my dad is moving back and I'm so on the first plane back to FL :)
