Annoyed - vent - money realted

I just realized that DH spends more money on lunch and coffee in a week than I spend on groceries.  Thing is, its not that he has nothing to take for lunch.  I usually make something with leftovers and we have some microwave meals that we keep on hand in the event that there are no leftovers.  Dont get me wrong, I have no problem with eating out for lunch once in a while but this is getting out of hand.

Whenever I ask him about it he always says its because he does not like his manager so he needs to get away from work for a while.  Or that he didnt feel like eating what he had, or he forgot to pack an ice pack so his lunch was probably not good blah blah blah.   I have suggested that he eat his darn lunch at work, then go out to Starbucks and read or go for a walk or go to the library or something that gets you away without spending $15 on all you can eat sushi.

Drives me crazy!!  Thanks for letting me vent.

  • oooh, that would get me, too!  That's a lot of $ on lunch!  $15 a day for 52 weeks is almost $4k!!  Although, all you can eat sushi for $15 is an awesome deal.  I'm not sure I could pass that up!!

  • That is a ton!!  We used to eat out a lot when we both worked nights, at the same company.  Now that we work in different places, he usually doesn't eat lunch and I can come home.  That helps but then I get bored and eat out.  I just thought my twice a week to twice a month habit was bad!! :)

  • I feel your pain!  I realized when we were both working at our last jobs, I used to stress about bringing Lean Cuisines or whatever in each day to avoid the deli calling to me...and not realizing that H was eating out or ordering in almost every day with co-workers...I wasn't mad so much about the money, but more jealous that he was eating better food (priorities, clearly)...but it is freakin' expensive to eat lunch out every day and it adds up quickly...not to mention the general lack of healthy options.  I'd say once per week is reasonable.

Now, I hardly ever even eat lunch at work and H is still working from home for now...we'll see how it goes once he's back in an office.  You've stirred this memory back up for me...lol!

  • Oooh, that would get me too. We make bfast, lunch, and dinner at/from home. MH goes out to lunch every once in a while and that's okay, but more than every once in a while is not in our budget.

  • i get lunch out 3 times per week, it's always soup from the place on our street.  It costs 3.18.

  • Lunch every day is expensive and when a lot of $15 lunches make it on the menu...you  have every right to be an irritated wife!  I only do a $15 lunch once or twice a month.  Most of the time I bring lunch.  On the rare days I buy and am by myself, I get $3-5 lunches.  Like Glitzy, I often get soup.
  • Dang! I feel bad if I go out to lunch and spend a whopping $5-$7 on it!

That boy needs to be reined in but good! I would tell him that he has to start taking the money for his lunches out of his allowance. That might curb his spending!

That's the deal DH and I have; lunch from home comes out of the grocery budget, lunch from other places comes out of our individual allowances.  That way we get to make the choice without upsetting the family funds (or each other).  Saves a lot of fighting, in my experience!

  • While I was pg w/ Jake, we also realized that DH spends like $50/week on lunch.  Now I make sure to get him cold cuts from the grocery store, or we make extra meatballs/chicken parm at dinner and he makes subs out of them.  He still probably eats out 2x/week but it's much, much improved!
