Why is it...

that when men leave the room for an extended period of time, like, to play video games in the other room, they leave the TV on? Do they think the Nielsens are secretly monitoring that they're fans of Total Recall? Is it necessary to have the same game on in multiple rooms, only one of which is being watched?

Re: Why is it...

  • In my house, yes the Tv must me on the same show in every room.  During football season it is the worst.  DH will be watching the game in the living room and will also have it on in the kitchen, the bedroom, the screen porch and the garage just in case he happens to go to one of those rooms.

Not only the TV has to be on but every.single.light in the house has to be on.  Apparently he is unable to flip the swtich into the off position as he is leaving the room even though he was able to turn it on when he went into the room.

Annnnddd, he wonders (ok bitchess) about why the electricity bill is so high.

YES!!! This, this, this! I am constantly turning off lights, fans, etc. I now understand how my dad felt and why he'd always be so mad at me for leaving lights on all over the house.

  • DH is sooo guilty of not turning lights off.

What he also does, tv-wise, that drives me crazy is sit down with me, choose something to watch and 15 minutes into it he'll leave to go upstairs and play video games.  Meanwhile I'm either sucked in to whatever crap movie he chose in the first place and end up watching it by myself or I've missed the first 15 minutes of what I would have rather been watching but didn't know was on.

My parents would charge us a quarter every time they found our bedroom light on and we were not in the room.  Funny thing was that we lived in military housing when I was growing up so my parents never even paid an electric bill, the government did!  I seriously wonder how much $$ my parents made off my sisters and I.

  • DH loves to leave the garage open with music blaring and lights on full flood.  I actually keep hoping someone will steal his drum set out of there so that I can park my car in the garage Wink

Exactly. I'd choose something totally different to watch if it were just me, but no. And then he leaves the room, and I'm sucked in. Or he leaves the room, I'm nursing Michael, and the remote is out of reach.

OMG yes! I remember those days. And sometimes James would already be asleep on me and I couldn't yell for DH to come hand me back the remote.
  • Add my DH to the list of culprits. I've also developed a very passive aggressive way of dealing with it. I will go find him and ask if he is still watching tv in said room even though he's obviously done and when he says yes I just go "hmmm...okay..." and walk away. He usually gets the point.

  • H is the opposite.  He's a total nazi about turning lights off in rooms we're not in (and not too many on in rooms we ARE in) and about turning the TV off the second we walk away.

But he's insane.  He also says (totally joking) we're not using the AC until I get a job, so we better hope it doesn't get too hot soon.  lol

i'm the AC nazi in our house. we don't turn it on until it's over 80*, and i keep it set at 80. heat is set at 60* in the winter, and rarely comes on.

Good for her! As a taxpayer, I applaud. haha

I'm a habitual light-leaver-oner. DH leaves fans on CONSTANTLY. Like, the PORCH fan.  Whyyyyyyy?!
