raleigh/wake co gals!

tell me about the schools you love. welre moving there this summer and looking to be in a good school district for our little ones to start school the following year.

Re: raleigh/wake co gals!

  • I don't have kids and haven't done much research.  But I know that all of my neighbors prefer Durant Elementary (year-round) and Durant Middle.
  • The girls on the bump might be able to help better. I also don't have kids, but when I house hunting I noticed Leesville schools are touted by listings.  The elementary school follows a traditional calender year, though, so I know some districted to it  end up send their kids to another nearby school that is year-round. Honestly, though, the Wake county schools are a bit of a mess right now.  District lines get changed year to year and there's controversy over community schools vs. bussing kids for diversity (and to balance enrollement).  I think it will all blow over eventually, but I don't know how I'd feel if I had school-aged kids.  Charter schools seem to be quite popular, so that may be something you'll want to investigate, but I hear they are quite competitive to get into.
  • I'm not sure where you're coming from, but there's not "districts" here like in other parts of the country. All schools in NC are county based, so if your children attend public schools then they will attend Wake County Public Schools, or whatever county public schools you live in.

Ditto PP on Wake Co Schools being a mess right now.  Charter schools are great here, as well as private schools. I teach at a charter school, and while I don't think the public schools are necessarily "bad," I think there are a lot of headaches involved with them that could easily be avoided.
