I need an attorney...

Does anyone have a referral for a family law attorney? I've got some stuff going on in my family (no, I'm not getting divorced - it's something completely unrelated) that I'd like to consult with an attorney about. Any thoughts on how to even go about finding an attorney? This is something I've never had to do before so I'm a little unsure where to even start.

Any referrals or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks much!

  • I sent you a PM with someone's contact info.

Also, I didn't add in my PM that you could google the bar association for the county in which you live.  Many of them have attorney referrals and some even offer low cost phone consultations.

  • I used Chad Henderson with Henderson, Howard, Pawluk & McNamara in Brooklyn Center.  I had him handle a prenuptial agreement.  He does wills, trusts, prenuptials, custody cases??most things family related.  I felt he was fairly high priced lawyer, but he had experience.  There was a free consultation which I got a lot of information from.  He had an hourly rate, I asked him how many hours he expected it to take then asked him to cap the costs at that number ? he agreed, but came in way below the cap.

I think I was a smaller job for him because things were pretty delayed, however, I felt like he was making a pretty secure document.  He finished with enough time to get everything put through.

My husband?s lawyer was Louis Romain, Romain Law Office, LLC.  I know very little about him besides he was cheap (in comparison to others I contacted) and that he got his portion done on time.  He does criminal law and family law.  I think that he gave a free consultation, but I am not sure.  Not sure what his prices are now, but at the time he as a discount lawyer ? small guy trying to get a practice going.

  • I didnt know how to do a PM, but if you want more information you can try sending me one.

  • Do you have an employee assistance program (EAP) through your employer?  If so, you might have a benefit where you can call in, have a 1/2 hr free consultation with an attorney where they can give you some basic advice.  If they are not able to resolve your issue in the phone call, they have many referrals of places in your area to go.  Usually, you are then able to get a discount with attorney in your area with the referral from your EAP.   I used to work for a company that was an administrator for EAPs and a lot of the people calling in were so surprised to learn that they had all these services available to them.
