Re: Spanish grammar question

  • Not the 2nd choice? (Because isn't del "masculine?")

I haven't taken Spanish in years. I guess I'm not really sure what you are trying to communicate. Is la Paza a formal location? Or "peace."

  • Paz is a name. I think it's feminine though. La Paz, right? Maybe?

Del = contraction of de and el and would work if it was masculine.

  • From what I found it is feminine. I was under the impression that feminine words in Spanish used de la, del is only for masculine. But I don't actually know Spanish so I am only weighing in since there's almost no one here. In French this would be the rule (de la instead of masculine de l' (de le is incorrect for the masculine). In French it would be Bistro de la Paz not a la Paz. So I am just extrapolating because they are both Latin based!
  • The first one....bistro a la paz

Really? but doesn't a la mean "at"? Don't you want to say bistro of? If I put in "bistro of the Paz family" it translates to "bistro de la familia Paz." If I do "Paz bistro" it does "bistro Paz."
  • That was according to my sister who speaks Spanish. Other than that I have no idea!! Smile I don't speak Spanish and I am terrible with grammar. Ha!

  • Yeah, I actually think it would be Bistro Paz. When you're doing a possessive in a Latin based language (I know this is true in Italian, which I took for a bit) you flip the order. So where we would say the owner first, they put it after the possession.

Which is correct for the name of a restaurant:

Bistro a la Paz "Bistro to the Paz"

Bistro del Paz "Bistro of the Paz" masculine

Bistro de la Paz "Bistro of the Paz" feminine and the best choice.  The literal translation is Bistro of the Peace

Awesome. Thank you. I realize bistro is a French word so I'm mixing languages here, but thank you!

ETA: I plan on having this painted on a sign hopefully via Etsy and hanging it on our back patio. My husband put up a bunch of gorgeous lights out there and we kept talking about how we should do it up like a little restaurant and have people over. I think it will make a nice surprise for him (it's his last name).

    Yes  That sounds awesome!

  • Bistro de la Paz would mean Cafe of Peace or Peace Cafe. But if what you mean is that it's his restaurant, it should be in the possessive form, which is Bistro de Paz.
