Question about Wedding Photography...come in...
Sooooo....how many of you ladies found your wedding photographer on The Knot??? Or know of someone who did? Your participation would be GREATLY appreciated.
Re: Question about Wedding Photography...come in...
I assume you're looking to advertise?
If so, here are some thoughts (if not, you might not want to read my blabbering!)...
I used a friend and most of my friends who have been married in the last five years or so have used someone that they either know personally or who shot a wedding of another friend. I do know a lot of the higher end photographers in this area advertise and get business from the knot.
We used the knot for the resort I work at for several years and got very few leads. When we advertised, we got a list of new brides every quarter (I think that's how often at least). I think if we had the budget/time to send out a postcard or other little piece of information to the list each month, it would have helped us a lot. Northern California had thousands of brides on each list so we weren't able to make mailings work. When I signed up as a bride I only received a few pieces of mail from vendors so they definitely got some good attention (unfortunately I was keeping things pretty casual and they were all "fancy").
We started using a local publication for advertising here at work called "Here Comes the Guide" and have had way more leads from that in a half year than we had in a few years of the knot. They have a book that is at all of the bridal shops, etc... and an online database. It might be worth looking into something that's popular locally where you are -- local publications are usually less expencive too.
MY BLOG!
MY BLOG!
Aww, thanks! I think so too but I am just a little biased!
Sorry to hijack, Onion.
We used a lady that my mom knew from work who was getting her photography business going. I like my pictures well enough but I feel like she didn't really get us or the style we we really going for.
We also have a bridal guide that comes out as a special insert of our local paper every 6 months or so which highlights local resources.
A gorgeous baby can hijack my post any day....
I found ours more just searching the websites/blogs I found on Google of photogs in my area. I may have gotten some names through other people on my local knot board but thats about it using the knot.
If people in your area are able to find your website on a web search, I think thats really valuable!
Ditto this EXACTLY. I loved the photography websites that had sample galleries to browse and were well set up.
As you might know, we ended up booking a very well respected STL photographer and I had never even heard of her before- I found her through a Google search for "photojournalistic wedding photographers". She didn't advertise at all- The Knot or any other local magazine/bridal guide, and as far as I know she still doesn't, except for having a FB page.
I've been doing a lot of reading on this subject lately (being in the same boat you are) and advertising, print or web, mainly pays off with name recognition. The brides see your name listed over and over in ads and therefore you are more "familiar" to them. However, the number one thing that drives sales is referrals- either from previous clients or from other vendors. Make sure you network on your upcoming weddings and make sure the vendors think of you first when they're working with their own brides.
