I just did an estimate of what DH & I will need to contribute to a 529 plan to pay for baby's college and this is what is said:
100% of your total college costs will be $312,166. You will need to make monthly contributions of $602 to meet this cost.
Seriously? Oh boy!
Re: So this is depressing:
The Sand in My Snow Boots
I have no idea how anyone pays for their kids' college. My parents paid for my undergrad when it was about $26K/year in 1988-92, and I have no idea how they did that.
It's insane, and college costs have risen a lot faster than salaries. Not cool.

yeah, DH and I are still paying OUR OWN loans, our parents helped us a bit and i had scholarships, but we're both still paying. honestly, if we're in a position to pay for our kids' college, great, if not, i don't think there's anything wrong for having them help pay as well. i do want to start their college savings as soon as we get ours paid off.
I always told DH that we would also take care of college tuition. I too was fortunate enough to have my parents pay all of my education. DH received mostly scholarship and just has 1 very small loan that he pays.
