How often do you go to the grocery store?

My co-workers think I'm nuts.  I try to limit how often we go to the grocery store because I cannot stick to a list.  Since we've had the baby, we've been going every three weeks.  Week 1 is salads and fresh veggies and fruits that spoil quickly ( like strawberries/blueberries).  Week 2 is fruits and veggies that don't spoil as quickly (like apples, oranges, sweet potatoes) and/or frozen veggies.  Week 3 is frozen fruits (smoothies) and frozen veggies.  They say I'm a minority because most people go to the grocery store at least once a week.  It inspired me to ask you all..

Re: How often do you go to the grocery store?

  • usually every other week for our big staple foods.  We usually purchase meat the day we are going to eat it- so I make two stops per week to a local store usually.

  • Weekly.  I make a meal plan for the week and go on the weekends.

  • Lately, every week. Once the little bugger started eating full on human portions of every meal, we're there every week and not cheaply. I do make sure though that he and us always have fresh fruits and veggies.

I was just saying today how we go way too often. Pre-child eating machine, we'd go every two weeks and a lot of time we'd go 2 1/2, etc.

I can't only imagine when baby #2 starts eating big boy food. Luckily that is far away :)

  • Probably twice a week on average.  Once a week for major shopping and often another smaller trip (usually to a different store) to buy sale items and/or whatever I forgot to get on the first trip.  Even though I meal plan and shop with a list, I somehow always manage to miss something.

I could never go to the store less than once a week.  I can only fit three gallons of milk in my fridge without major rearranging and we go through that in a week.

  • around every week and a half - I don't really keep track, I just go about 1 day after we run out of food.

  • every 2 weeks or so... sometimes we can stretch it to a month depending on what we buy and how many frozen veggies I feel like eating ;) We have to get milk and bread occasionally... but I am hoping to start making our own bread so that we don't have to buy that.

  • Usually 1-2 times/week.  I have no idea how we're going to grocery shop now though...I guess one of us will go out on the weekend while the other stays home, or we'll make a family affair of it eventually.

  • once, sometimes twice (or more) a week.

How does your food last that long that you can go so infrequently?  We throw out so much wasted food as it is, going once a week...

  • About once a week but when we're busy I can usually stretch to two. I also usually go to the Farmer's Market twice a month in the winter and every week in the spring, summer and fall.  The FM is three blocks away, though, so it's easy and quick.

I should say that DH does stop and get milk in between.  Other than that, we don't buy anything in between. Believe it or not, we throw nothing away.  Pretty much ever.  I make HUGE batches of food.  One for us to eat now, one for the freezer.  I only make one meal at a time and we eat leftovers until they're gone.  When the leftovers are gone, then I'll make a new meal.  End products always get made into something else.  Bananas when they get a little brown go in the freezer- perfect for smoothies the 3rd week.  Bread that's getting stale (I am now making all my own) gets dried out to make breadcrumbs.  Apples that are soft get made into applesauce.  I'll throw a bunch of veggies that I think are at the end of their lifespan in the crockpot for veggie soup or tossed in a skillet for a stir fry.  Creativity is key!

  • At least twice a week. We meal plan for five or six days of the week, and I do a big trip for all that stuff. And then we usually cook something special on the weekend and hit up the fancy grocery store for that meal and anything else we want from the fancy store. And I'll often go to another grocery store for their sales and good produce. And then sometimes I have to go because I forgot something. I can't even imagine going less than once a week. Our kitchen is tiny and I'd have nowhere to store the food.

  • Up until 2 weeks ago I worked 4 nights a week at a grocery store, so we'd make one trip a week to walmart to get the stuff we needed that is too expensive & my little grocery store (cleaning supplies, dog food, cat food, paper stuff), and then i'd get meat & sale stuff @ the grocery store, but realizing how much $ i shelled out at the store when I worked there I'm glad I don't now.  I'm going to start implementing a meal plan type thing, but MH & I are only home max 2 nights a week together - the rest of the time he works nights so it's pointless for me to plan to make meals 7 nights a week.  I tried making up a bunch of soups & meals to freeze so we just zap em and reheat at work or when we're home on lunch together.  I'm hoping to wean down the Walmart trips to once every 2 weeks so we can use up some of the stuff we have overflowing our pantry we never seem to eat before it gets outdated. :/

  • I go every two weeks for a big shop but go weekly to get the fruit/salad stuff and whatever little things I may need.  Menu planning has helped us save money and DH always takes leftovers to work so we don't have a lot of waste.
  • Wow!  That would take some serious planning and creativity!  And a husband who is not picky....he says he eats anything I make, but he's crazy.  I know exactly what he will and will not eat which is why he eats what I make.  Anyways, on Sundays I browse the circulars.  Whichever store has the best deals overall is the winner.  I basically plan meals based on what is on sale.  I plan for about 6 meals knowing that on the weekend we'll either get pizza or something like that or be at someone else's house or eat leftovers.   I usually end up forgetting something or we run out of something I thought we had enough of for the week (like coffee creamer) and end up having to go back to the store mid-week.   So I go about twice a week.

  • Once a week on the weekend.

  • Every week. Lately it's been twice b/c I'm buying veggies like crazy for Caroline and I. They go bad so quickly I don't want to buy too much at one time. Figure I'll leave it to the stores to be reponsible for them :) Staples I buy once a week. I hate shopping , but I can't push a heavy cart around b/c it hurts my ankle and DH and I both going is a nightmare b/c we over spend!
  • About once a week, but sometimes I'll have to go again mid-week for fresh food because I don't like buying too much at once. With it being just me, it's easy to have things go bad before I can use them! Usually I'll do a "big" shop on a weekend when I just got paid - stock up on frozen and dry stuff, pet food and pet treats, in addition to daily use items like milk and cereal - and a smaller trip the next weekend to replenish those daily use type items.
  • When DH is out to sea, I'll make one big shopping trip about every other week, and then I may pop in once a week for fresh veggies, meats, etc. depending on what i feel like eating. When he's home from sea, we usually go once a week together and do it all in one fell swoop

  • usually once every week or week-and-a-half...depending on what else is going on...I try to go through the sale circular and meal-plan based on that...and try to find a couple of meals that will result in leftovers...then sometimes we can stretch the next big trip by stopping at the small, local market a couple of blocks away for things like bread or vegetables for a specific meal

Veggie Soup is the best way to NOT throw away stuff!

I've been diligent about this - it really stretches those fresh veggies and meals

We menu plan on Sundays and I go shopping on Mondays.   Sometimes we need milk, but I have Tim pick it up on his way home.  Usually every two weeks it's a "big" trip.

This is pretty much us... I've really been making an effort to plan better and for us to eat better since MJ has been in the picture, but a few nights a week I'll call Mike on the way home and ask him to pick something up at the store.  We plan sunday mornings over coffee now and one of us will go in the afternoon.  It's been working well for us so far.

  • Oh, and I am TOTALLY impressed with every 3 weeks!! Not sure we'll ever be that organized!!!
  • Ugh, I feel like I LIVE at the grocery store.  I really need to plan better.
