weird situation with my mom and bmw, can you weigh in?

my mom was in the hospital last week and was diagnosed with diverticulitis. she is feeling better. her regular doctor called her a couple of days ago and asked her if she ever had her appendix out and my mom was like uh...no. the doctor said well i am looking at your ct scan and it shows that you don't have one and there is a clip (?) there indicating it was removed. the doctor called the hospital (the scan was done in the ER) and they are denying there was a mix up. now my mom is racking her brain trying to figure out how she might have had her appendix removed. like, did they take my appendix when i had my hysterectomy? she can't figure out what is going on. i was thinking gee, i hope there isn't a woman out there who is thinking she has no reproductive organs. also hopefully my mom was diagnosed correctly. bmw - what do you think could have happened?
Me:39 Dx LPD, Fibroid, AMA and all that goes with that. H:37 Dx low motility and low morphology. TTC since 3/12. Clomid 8/12 and 9/12: BFN. 11/12 on a break for Myomectomy sched. 11/26. Resume TTC early 2013.

  • Woh! That is strange! It seems plausible that there could have been a mix up, I wonder why the hospital wouldn't just do another scan, just to be sure? (Hopefully BMW can weigh in on that)

I hope she can get it figured out soon!

  • yeah i told my mom there was probably more of a likelihood that they mixed them up than that she had an organ removed without her knowledge. supposedly the hospital has all these safeguards in place so they told her doctor that it wasn't possible or something. my mom just wants to get to the bottom of it so that she and this other person if there was a mix up can get properly diagnosed. my mom's doctor wasn't planning to pursue it further so my mom is going to see if she could access another ct from 2007 or have an ultrasound (if that even would show it) when she goes to the gastro doc on thurs.

  • At first I though "Oh gee did her mom run out and buy a corvette too?!" LOL.

I would say there are a handful of explanations.

    1. The hospital messed up. I dont care how many safety protocols are in place if humans are involved things can get messed up. It happens. I just had an incident on Saturday where I panicked for a second b/c I thought I may have accidentally posted lab results on the wrong pts electronic record. Luckily though what I thought was wrong was just a hand written typo that never made it to the patients record.

    2. Something on the CT is obscuring the appendix. Its there but its being hidden by something else. The clip that is being seen could be a clip that was used during the hysterectomy (to clip vessels when they removed the uterus).

    3. Something happened during the hysterectomy that caused them to have to remove the appendix as well. Did she have the hysterectomy b/c of cancer? A quick google search should that its pretty common practice to remove the appendix while performing a hysterectomy for cancer reasons. Either way she could contact the doctor who preformed the hysterectomy and ask for a copy of her operative note and pathology report. The op not would describe what was done during the hysterectomy and the pathology report would give the break down of everything removed during the surgery.

    4. Very rarely people are born without an appendix and the clips could be from the hysterectomy itself.

Now I'm curious!! Keep us posted!!

hahahahahahaha! that's hysterical! nope, my mom is still driving her suburu...

thank you SO much for the possible explanations! i am going to c&p them to my mom in an email. i'm glad i posted!

  • wow, i don't know. that's scary! Tongue Tied Seems most likely to me that the CT's were mixed up...that's not a good sign at all, but it's the best and most likely scenerio

    Keep us posted.
