Should I apply for a new job now or wait?

Hi ladies.  I just stumbled on this board yesterday and thought you guys could give me some insight on a situation I have.

The biggest part of the equation is that I am getting married on April 19.  I have gotten to the point that I absolutely hate my job.  I actually have it pretty easy most days and it will take some getting used to actually working really hard, but that is beside the point. J  I?ve gotten to where I want to take off as many days as I can and have already used my whole week of sick days and it is only February.  I am a legal assistant and only fell into this job because I started as a receptionist and then moved into an open legal assistant position.  I finished my B.S. in Business Information Systems Degree last August and am ready to move on to bigger and better things.  I have been looking for jobs since I got my degree but with the wedding getting closer and closer I am not sure what to do.

I have found a job that I think sounds pretty interesting (commute would be twice as long as I have now) and they require a degree. This job has been open for 28 days now.  My question for you all is whether I should apply for this job even though we are a month and a half from the wedding.   Or, should I wait until we get back from the wedding to apply for jobs.  Thanks for any insight you guys can offer me.

Sorry this was so long for a first post. ;)

  • Apply now. As you know, it can take a while to find a job. Even if you applied for this job now, the interview (should you get it) wouldn't be until sometime in March. If they do a phone screen, the in-person interview wouldn't be until mid/late March. You could go into it knowing you couldn't start until the end of April, and would just tell them that when it comes up in the interview.

  • Second the 'apply now.' Most employers will work with your existing vacation plans, especially for a once-in-a-lifetime event, as long as you are upfront with them about that.
  • Apply now.  My dh and I got married in mid October a few years ago.  He got a job 5 days before our wedding (literally his first day was Monday and we got married Saturday).  We had just moved in August so that's why he was looking for a job (yay to finding a job in 2 months!).  Anyways, they were fine with him taking a week off, and 3 years later he's still at that job.  He was upfront with them from the first interview, letting them know our wedding date and honeymoon plans.  Bosses are human, too... they understand once in a lifetime events like a wedding and most are willing to work around it.

  • Thanks!  I have submitted my application online.  Now it's a waiting game.  I feel better already having an app out there as I have been thinking about this job since the day they first posted it.  =)
  • I made a Linked In account yesterday, and today I noticed that the VP of Human Resources at the company I applied for looked at my profile.  So I know they at least got my resume/application for both of the jobs I applied for there. =)
  • I would apply now.

I had applied to a job a few months close to my wedding.  During the interview, I let them know about my wedding plans and they were fine with it.

I think that if a employer feels you have all the qualities they are looking for, they will be willing to work with you.

Good luck and Congrats on your wedding!
