Tipping home cleaners?

I had a post earlier about the Professional Home Cleaning company, they are coming this weekend.  Anyone have cleaners who work for a company clean for them?  Do you tip the cleaners/ what do you tip the cleaners?  It is a coupon deal so I only paid $86 and they have to come twice.  I asked the man on the phone what it would regularly cost, which I think confused him since he seemed to have lengthy process to get an official quote.  I think he finally got that I was using it to base the tip amount for the discounted services.  He said it would be about double.  The two of us were not communicating that well, but I think he meant $170 per time (which seems high to me).

So, 2-3 people are coming to do the cleaning?.what would be reasonable to leave them?  I would guess it should be cash and probably given in smaller bills so they can divide it equally (incase I am not home when they leave).

Just a curiosity question, if you hire a self employed cleaner do you tip them?  I assume no since you are paying them the price they determine they need to be paid.

Re: Tipping home cleaners?

  • I don't tip my self-employed house cleaner, because she already charges fair living wages for her work (I did, however, give her a little tip/gift for the holidays).

The only time I've used cleaners that were employed by a larger company was when a friend purchased a one-time cleaning for me as a wedding gift, and yes, I did tip them.  There were three cleaners, and they were there for three hours or so, and I tipped them $30... no idea if that was reasonable or not (especially since I don't know what the cleaning cost), but they seemed very grateful.

  • There was two people and I gave them $26 total.  They didnt look at it.  They were there for 2 hrs and I hope they get atleast $9 from their company.
  • we don't tip our cleaning lady but we gave her $100 for christmas. she works through a service (Maid Especially for You) but we still feel like she's already getting paid to do her job so we don't pay her extra.
