Not a regular poster but I have a random question...
My husband and I bought our house in June and the bushes along the front are blooming for the first time since we've been here. I think they're gorgeous, but can't figure out what they are. I know nothing about flowers, so if you think you may know what they are, please let me know. Thanks you so much!
http://tinyurl.com/48vdwee This is a bloom from the tree/bush. It's not a rose as it doesn't have thorns but it looks very similar to roses I've seen.
http://tinyurl.com/4symz47 This is one of the bushes. (Yes, I know I need to trim it back)
http://tinyurl.com/4chhpkl A few of the blooms.
Thanks again!
Re: does anyone know?
Thank you! That's what I was leaning toward (based on a Google search) but wasn't 100% sure. So it's a shrub...do I need to prune it back like our crepe myrtles?
I don't have a Camellia bush in my yard, but I encourage you NOT to prune it as heavily as I've seen Crepe Myrtles pruned aka Crepe Murder. Here's a video I found on pruning Camellias.
Do a search to see if you can find some other links that will help. ~NB~ is a certified arborist, and she will be far more useful than I am on pruning.I'm sure she'll have some pointers for you.
HTH!
Hi there! Yep, it has been correctly identifed as a Camellia.
It looks quite well pruned to me. If the foliage is too much for you, I'd consider training it to grow around the corner as an espalier. Otherwise, I think it looks great and doesn't need fixing.
Nitaw is right again- I too wince every time I hear people talk about pruning or "cutting back" their Crapes. I don't understand why these trees are abused to such an extent, every year, and other trees (that really NEED to be pruned) get no pruning whatsoever.
Thank you so much! Like I said, we just bought/moved into this house in June, so there were no blooms then. My husband and I even contemplated cutting them down....I am so glad we didn't! I was so excited to see the blooms; we didn't have any flowering shrubs or trees at our old house. I'm even more excited to know that these shrubs/trees/whatever the are have done so well with little to no care! I think they're beautiful and I definitely am proud of them!
Thanks again for clarifying what they are.
