Not sure if I really like my job
I started a new job beginning of January. I was in school and working pt so this is my first ft position. My biggest thing when job hunting was I wanted a job that challenged me and kept me busy. Well its in the Accounting industry and I feel like I am not doing anything I like and I also have many days where I am bored. I love working with numbers but the type of Accounting position this is I hate. It involves working with securities (stocks, bond, etc) and I don't get it and don't care for it. The person I replaced didn't have a degree so they knew that whoever they hired would pry get the work done faster. Some days I am busy. Now that its tax season I am a little more busy with that but I am afraid that once summer hits I will be dead. I hate thinking about quitting already and would for sure try to move to another spot within this company before ever quitting. I love the company and benefits and get paid good but I just can't see myself doing this for a long time. I am most afraid if I were to leave and end up getting another position I boring. Should I suck it up and then if something else comes along take it? Is it common to not be 100% busy at a job?
Re: Not sure if I really like my job
Don't quit, give it more time. You haven't even been there a full 2 months.
Maybe there will be big projects to work on over the summer that will fill your time. Maybe your boss is waiting for you to gain more experience at their company before passing you a lot of one-off type stuff and doesn't want to overwhelm you while you are new.
I feel like a lot of times when you get a new job, if you don't immediately love it, its easy to want to quit. Spend this time networking within the organization, volunteer for work groups or projects. Does your company support any charities? I've found that volunteering for these campaigns are a great way to meet lots of people outside of your department. Since you state you like the company, you don't want to leave now and burn bridges.
A few things rise to the surface for me:
1-this is your first FT job; you're still learning what it means to be at work all day, having to commit yourself to a job and develop stable and reliable relationships within the company (and I mean this in the most polite way).
2-You "hate" the job but you're "bored" and you "love working with numbers" but "you don't get it and don't care for it". These are interesting contradictions
These two things scream to me "I don't yet understand the job I've taken on, but I'm too impatient to figure it out and was hoping for something I could understand so I could get an easy win." And honestly, I mean this in a nice way. My guess is that you're both bored and hate the job because you don't understand it yet. You don't know how to maneuver in the company and it's frustrating, and right now, it's looking easier to give up than to push through to really mastering the job.
Bottom line-if you're comforatble and sure of yourself, you're not learning something new; and if you're not learning something new, you're not growing. Life isn't about learning everything in college and easily applying it on your first job and breezing through a career. It's about applying techniques to real world issues and developing holistic solutions. Gah, I sound like such a consultant, but it's so true. Dive into this job, developing the relationships, and learning how you can apply theory to real world problems. My guess is you'll look back and think that newbie was thinking crazy for wanting to quit.
Absolutely! I'm a vet-tech, some days I'm so busy i don't have time to realize how many directions i'm being stretched! Other days, I have absolutely nothing to do, and i clean the same windows 10X, and still need to find ways to occupy myself for the rest of my shift!
as for you not enjoying what you do, I would think about exploring other departments, if that is a possibility. life is too short to spend 1/3 of your life doing something that makes you miserable!
