Roc/Monroe Co. Area Knotties- Fostering advice...
DH and I are preparing to enter the world of becoming foster parents, and other than a few things I learned on the web, we have no idea what we're doing! I called the local "homefinding department" and was given a rundown of the whole process, and so we signed up for an information session next month. I guess what I want from you ("the experts") is some guidance, advice...anything to help me learn more about this whole thing. I should probably mention that our interest in this stems from infertility or trouble with TTC issues. I was diagnosed with endometriosis, PCOS, thyroid disorder and a closed fallopian tube. From what we understand, adoption via foster parenting is much less complicated (legally speaking) and expensive than other adoption paths. We are still TTC, but obviously don't want to wait to get the ball rolling with this. I just need some advice, and if there's something I should know up front, that would be appreciated as well! Thanks!!

I'm a random poster here.
I work in foster care... what are you looking for specifically? My suggestion is to contact a local agency- not necessarily the county but places like Crestwood or Hillside. They will have you take a MAP class which I think is a lengthy class but well informative and prepares you for what you may encounter as a f.p. You will have to do the background checks and regular training and homefinding interviews and such. Specify if you are willing to do therapeutic foster care or regular foster care. Therapeutic would be children who need extra support and may present with more issues- behaviorally and mental health wise.
It's a great opportunity! Good luck!
