Cumin Substitute? (HELP NEEDED PLEASE!)

So I am making this for Crockpot Tuesday (yes, that's a thing now.)

And I assumed I had cumin at home in my spice rack. Well, I don't. So I didn't buy any.
I am no good with spices, so I have 2 questions:
1) Is it a strong spice? Will the food greatly be affected by 1/2 teaspoon of it missing?
2) What is a close substitute for it?

Help would be greatly appreciated!!

Re: Cumin Substitute? (HELP NEEDED PLEASE!)

  • Cumin has a very distinct flavor, so nothing is a perfect substitute, however, it's not irreplaceable.  Coriander is probably the closest substitute.  Chili powder would be my next choice, though I imagine the recipe probably already calls for C.P.  If you don't have coriander then I would just increase the amounts of other spices that are in a "Southwest Spice" mix.  Chili powder, paprika, black pepper, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, salt.  For example, if it calls for 1 tsp. of cumin and the recipe already calls for chili powder then I'd do 1/8 tsp black pepper, 1/8 tsp. cayenne, 1/4 tsp paprika, 1/4 tsp garlic powder, and 1/4 tsp. salt.

  • Erin evidently knows WAY more than I do about spices (and can I say I'm jealous about that), but I just wanted to say that this recipe sounds amazing...and will probably be made in my house in the next week!

Will you please let us know how it turns out???

  • Thanks Erin!! I litereally know nothing about spices, so this helps a lot :)

I will definitely share how it turned out sans Cumin, Megan! It looks sooooo yummy!
