Baby Monitor Help Please!

I'm not quite sure what I want to do, so any help from moms on here would be appreciated.  I had registered for a Sony Audio Monitor that had two receivers.  I thought two receivers would be nice, especially if one of us was in the house and one was outside, in the garage, basement, etc. or so we could leave one in the bedroom and be able to carry another one around.  Well, my aunt, grandma, and step aunt all went in on a video monitor for me.  Once I started looking at it and reading about the one they purchased, I think I am going to return it.  The monitor is huge, not the flat screen style (it is a CRT monitor, so it really is huge).  I really would prefer to have a receiver I can clip onto my belt loop so that I can carry it around with me when I am doing laundry or whatever.

My question is, do you feel video monitors are worth the expense?  I have been looking at a bunch of them online, and it is going to cost us an extra $50-$100 probably to get one that is rated well.  I am also thinking about taking it back and getting the one I originally registered for.  It is the highest rated audio one in Baby Bargains.  Also, if I do that, I can probably get something else off our list that we didn't get.  Any opinions about monitors?  Thanks so much!!

Re: Baby Monitor Help Please!

  • We don't have a video monitor, and I think the one we have is fine. We actually just started using it about 2.5 weeks ago. I personally don't think the video monitor is necessary, but I know some people really like them.

  • we do not have a video monitor.  I couldn't justify the expense.  Sure, they're cool, but our house isn't that big, only one floor and the bedrooms are like 10 steps from ours. (plus, they freak me out because you can pick up the signals or other video monitors and "check in" on your neighbor's babies if they have one.  This pretty much turned DH off to the idea)

The monitor that we do have has only 1 received and it's worked out just fine.  When I feel I really need it away from my bed, I just clip it on my pants and it's fine.  It was also nice to have on summer nights when we'd hang out outside with the neighbors.

  • That's how I have felt about them, but I heard from a few people that they thought having one may be helpful at times.  Our bedrooms are close together, and our house is a ranch, but it is a long one.  I just wasn't sure if it would really be worth it, especially since we still have a few bigger items we need to get as well.

  • I never wanted a video monitor. I only use the monitor at bedtime or I took it with me when I was outside. You will drive yourself crazy if you clip it to your belt and have it with you 24/7. My house is of average size and even w/ other children in the house I could still hear if the baby cried or woke up.

Oh, I don't want it with me 24/7 either, I was mainly thinking I would like to have it especially for outside, but when I am going to be in areas of the house when I won't hear her all too well (our basement, garage, and laundry room).  If I am in the living room working or something, I doubt I will have it with me.  I would just prefer to have the ability to take the monitor outside with me or something.  I honestly hadn't thought much about the video monitors either until I had a few friends tell me they would have been nice when their kids were a little older.   I am glad to hear so far though that everyone else has been fine with audio monitors.  I am thinking we will just stick with that.

  • I've only ever had the audio monitors and I think it works just fine.  Luckily in the house we are in now I don't think I'll really be using it to much, however I will say that I do wish I would of had a video monitor for when they are older because you can see what they are doing in their rooms...when they are having tantrums or you are trying to get them to sleep through the night.

  • I have a video monitor and love it. I didn't think I would want one and actually didn't even register for a monitor of any kind because TJ's crib was in our room at our old house. Once we knew we were moving to a house with a second floor and that he would be in his own room, we started looking at regular audio monitors. My parents actually got us the one we have now, and I am really happy with it. I like the monitor because it isn't huge and it is for both day and night use. I really like having the video monitor because now that he is older and can stand in his crib, I can see what he's doing instead of just listening to him. Its also nice at night because he always uncovers himself so I can check the monitor before I go to bed so I only have to go in his room if neccesary. It also worked wonders when he was really sick. I know most people say that video monitors aren't really neccessary, but I really like ours. I'll post a link to the one we have below. If you have any questions on it, let me know! I do know that you can get it from BRU, but I'm not sure if anywhere else around here sells it.

  • Thanks ladies!!  I was all set to go get the audio monitor, but when I returned something to target today, I browsed the clearance section, only to find a really nice video monitor with a handheld parent part for $67.  I decided to snatch that one up since it was right about the same price as the audio one I was going to get.  :)  I love the clearance sections of stores!!

For that price, I would have gone with the video monitor too! I wish we had a target :(

  • I used to sit for quite a lot of the kids when I worked for CDC and a place I worked for during college, and I absolutely LOVED having the video monitor part of it.  I know for us, when that time comes, we'll for sure be getting a video monitor.  They're pricier but I liked the peace of mind of being able to actually SEE them in there and know what they're doing.

BTW, off topic but still on the subject of monitors, I have a friend who nearly lost her first daughter to SIDs if she hadn't had this gadget:

    http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2970307

She now insists on it for her friends and wanted everyone to pass on word of how this thing probably saved Caelan's life.  It detects when movement stops (it's sensitive enough to detect breathing) and it went off one night, D went flying into the room, C wasn't breathing really, and D had to remove her from the crib and start changing her before she came to.  She fully credits this monitor for saving her daughter's life.  Said it hasn't gone off at all except that one time.  Bringing up monitors just reminded me of that story, so thought I'd bring it up.

  • Okay I have the video monitor (summer handheld) and honestly couldn't live without it. One night when B was little (like a year old) we were letting her CIO and she after about 5 minutes I liked at the monitor and her knee was stuck in the rails...so I was happy I was able to see that bc honestly we might have let her cry for another few minutes before going in if we hadn't seen that. I will NEVER use anything different. I think its well worth the $150+. Infact ours just broke after 3 yrs and I went and bought another one and Carly is almost 2. I need it. lol. Nice when we are outside having a campfire or I am in the kitchen cooking and she is sleeping, I can turn it on and take a peek. Or in the middle of the night I can just turn it on and look at her and see she is just fine. :)
