I'll try to not make this into a novel, but here's whats going on: I got a job at a vet clinic here in town when we moved and was only part time and worked my butt off while I was there to show them what a good and hard worker I was, and they moved me to a full time position because of that. I really really like most of my coworkers there, and my bosses are really nice, the only thing that I don't like is that it's a lot of b**ch work; mopping, cleaning up poop, cleaning windows, ect. It frustrates me a lot because I feel like I am wasting the 4 years I spent in college to earn a degree when none of the other technicians there have degrees, its all on the job training that they have.
We had our quarterly reviews last month, and we haven't gotten a chance to go over them with our bosses, but the girls were telling me how great I did on mine and that they were talking about training me for a vet tech position instead of what I'm doing now, so you can imagine that I was thrilled about that! So the weeks have gone on and we still haven't done our reviews yet, but a few weeks the main dr pulled me aside and told me that he really wanted to see me getting in to help with the exams and learn to pull blood and everything so that when one of the technicians leaves for school in June, I can step into her spot.
So that first week after he told me that, the technicians seemed to be working with me a lot on practicing that stuff and learning more things, but its slowly kind of stopped happening and I've gone back to just cleaning. Then I found out today that they are doing a work interview with a girl that just graduated from vet tech school tomorrow afternoon and if they like her she is going to start working there to take the technician's spot that is leaving in June. I kind of felt like I had been smacked in the face when I heard this...that is the only technician spot opening up and if this new girls comes in and fills it then I assume that I will just stay in my poop cleaning position, which I am getting really tired of. I did stuff like this all through college...I kind of feel like I should be past this after earning my college degree..right?
I don't know what to do. Part of me says to just wait it out and see what happens in June and then start looking for a job if that is what happens. I'm also impatient too and cleaning every single day makes me feel so useless and makes me feel like I am just wasting my time there when I could be at another job doing something that actually used my degree. I would feel bad if I switched to another job though since me being full time resulted in another girl getting fired...I would just feel guilty about that, but at the same time I want to be happy with my job and actually feel like I"m doing something worthwhile. I don't really think I want to be in the veterinary field anymore now so theres that too..
Sorry this was such a long post, but what would you all do? DH says I should go talk to my boss and ask if he is still planning on me moving to a tech position this summer but I don't feel entirely comfortable doing that..ugh I don't know
If you read through all this by the way here is a cookie!
Thanks for letting me vent!
Re: what would you do? sorry its kinda long..
Unfortunately, I think your DH is right. I would talk to your boss to clear up any confusion. Maybe their hiring another vet tech to expand the business? I don't know. I know it's difficult, but if you approach the subject in the right way it could lead to good things. Like, "Hi, I've really enjoyed doing these more difficult procedures and am glad you gave me the opportunity. I was wondering what will happen when blank leaves for school in June because I'm interested in taking on the additional responsibility...blah blah blah, etc, etc, etc.."
Either way, you know where you stand and can act accordingly.
my read shelf:
I agree with your H. They already spoke to you about the future plans of your job, and now you hear about somebody else getting interviewed. I would ask about what you heard and if it is true tell them that you would like to know what made them make the decision to look for somebody else or for constructive criticism and I would also probably start looking for other jobs b/c you are not being treated fairly!
And if it is not true, then you have nothing to worry about! and you can totally play it off to your advantage. Maybe the girl is being interviewed for your current spot?
HTH,
I wish that was the case but since she just graduated from vet tech school I'm assuming that she would be put into a vet tech position instead of a vet assistant position.
Part of the reason I'm hesitant to ask is b/c what happens if they don't hire her? Then I make myself look paranoid for no reason and that looks bad. Also I kind of feel like since we weren't directly told hey theres a girl interviewing for a vet tech spot doesn't that me look nosy sorta? ugh I don't know! I wish DH was finishing his masters this summer so we could move to a new place for his doctorate and I could start over there haha.
Thanks for your input though ladies, and for reading through that whole book haha!
I definitely agree with pps, and your H. Go talk to your boss and ask about your review. I would even say that you have a degree to do this, and you are looking for more responsibility. You know that there is someone leaving in June and you would like to be considered for her position. You don't have to mention that you heard that they were interviewing someone.
You definitely deserve better than cleaning poop! If they like you there and you are qualified for the position, you should take the initiative to get it!

Ditto everyone else. You should talk to your boss. I'd approach the conversation as "I'd like to go over my review with you and discuss my future". That way you're not directly bringing up this other girl, but you'll be able to let your boss know that you're very interested in taking on more responsibility and moving into the tech position.
Good luck!
