Have you ever...

Had allergy shots?  If so, tell me about them.  It is only Feb and I'm already dying here.

Re: Have you ever...

  • I had to have one one year. I usually take over-the-counter Clairtin, and it does the trick. I just have to take it every day in spring and summer. A few years ago it completely stopped working for me. I went to see my doctor and he gave me a shot and said to switch to another brand of medicine, so I started using Allegra. It worked, so I didn't have to return for any more shots, just a one time deal. Now, I just have to switch out my medicine every few years. My body just builds up a tolerance to it.

Sorry, that isn't really much help with the shots. My only advice is that maybe you just need new drugs.

  • I've run out of drugs.  I think that's the issue.  Claritin (and D), Zyrtec (and D), and Xyzal (and D) all worked for a while.  Allegra and Alavert never worked for me.  Then my last allergist had me combine Claritin and Zyrtec.

Now I'm having weird eye allergies and contact allergies when I don't think I'm touching anything I should be allergic to, so I am itchy (and miserable) all the time.  And my nose is constantly stuffy and my throat sounds like I swallowed sandpaper.

    No bueno.

This.  I think many people are like this, though.  I have rotated through quite a few medicines now... I can't even remember all of them now.

My allergies were really bad in high school.  My eyes would swell shut, I would constantly sneeze, have a runny nose and even have a few nose bleeds.  This was when I changed to Claritin from another type/brand I don't remember.  And this was able to alleviate most of my symptoms. Claritin stopped working for me a couple years later and I switched to Zyrtec-D.  My allergies have not been anywhere near as bad for the pass few years, so I can get away with taking Zyrtec when I need it.

Have you tried flo-nase?  I know a couple people who have awful allergies and swear by it.  I think it's a nasal spray.  There's another one that a couple people at my work told me about but the name escapes me now.

Sorry I can't be of any help in regards to allergy shots.  I think of shots as a last resort thing, and I suppose I never been in that situation, yet.

  • I haven't gotten them but both my brother and my co-worker have done them for years.

I believe you go pretty frequently in the beginning as they gradually up your dosage and then it trails off to like once a month. I know they both said they could tell when it was getting close to the next dosage bc they'd get a runny nose or something. I think they also have to re-mix your specific formula every 8 months-year which means you start the whole step-up thing again. My coworker is allergic to cats and has three of them - the shots definitely worked for her!
