Vent: Stupid Prize!

Last summer DH was on a lucky streak of winning things (concert tickets, calendars, cds, movie premiere tickets) and a package prize for Milwaukee's music fest, Summerfest.

The Summerfest prize included: 2 r/t Amtrak tickets from CHI to MKE (value $84), 2 passes to Harley David Museum (value $32), 2 Brewers, upper bowl outfield tix (tickets said $1 each, but estimate retail value is about $60 tops), 2 General Admission tix to Summerfest (value $30), and also a nylon drawstring bag w/3 cds (estimated value $50).

So those add up to about $260...well, we received (about a month ago) a 1099-tax form (required for any prize won valued over $500)...stating that the prizes listed above were valued at $700. Are you $hitting me??

DH contacted the radio station and listed the prices I listed above, we still have the Brewers tix and Summerfest tix and the other prices were found online.  The radio station said that the Summerfest tix were supposed to be All-Access passes and so now we've been waiting 2 wks for the radio station to contact/hear from Summerfest.  I'm so frustrated with all of this!  There is an option on the tax-return to put your 1099 taxable amount in and then the estimated value...I'm tempted to just do this and put in $260 and although it's unlikely we'd be audited, I'd rather wait to hear from the radio station and get an updated form, or have them revoke what was sent since really the prize value is under $500 and no form should be needed.

I just want to be able to file!! Grr!

Thanks for reading :O)

Re: Vent: Stupid Prize!

  • I can see your frustration.  I think they were trying to pull a fast one in not giving you what you actually won (all-access) but either way....that is screwy.

  • That is crazy. I was worried that I would get some crazy tax form for the money I got in my settlement and when I asked my lawyer about it he basically said that it it was up to the insurance company. Thank God I didn't have to claim that, we would have been screwed!

    lol!

I wonder how that works, my sister received a claim from a car accident.  I can't remember if that was in 2010 or 11 though.

Michelle, you're right, I think someone was either not paying attention or trying to pull a fast one.  Thank goodness we kept the ticket stubs!
