Book Club update & DR makeover AW - before & after PIPs

First off, book club ladies, we let Norm out of doggie jail (the home office) after everyone left and he ran into the kitchen all panting and smiling, looked around, ran to the living room, looked around and then came back into the kitchen where he did this for five minutes:

"Where are my lady friends?  They were JUST here."

Secondly, here is the link to the book club schedule.  Devon is next for March with romance.

And on to the dining room!

Yay for brittjoy and her spray paint (with the trigger!) saving idea!  The chairs still look pretty crappy, but they look great from a distance and that's what matters.  :)

What would you put on the sideboard?  (That candle is just there to get rid of the dog smell for book club.)  On the table?  Anything else I'm missing?

Re: Book Club update & DR makeover AW - before & after PIPs

  • Norm makes me want a dog really badly. He is just too freaking adorable.

As for the dining room, I think you did an awesome job. I really love the color combo.

  • Looking good!

I don't have any specific ideas for the sideboard, but I recommend looking at the YoungHouseLove blog for ideas.  They have a similar setup in their first house dining area.

  • I love the light look!  Maybe a low vase of flowers on the sideboard?  I hesitate to suggest that though because I hate fake flowers and buying real can get expensive and a tad frivolous.

  • Book club was wonderful, thank you so much for hosting! The dogs were wonderful, seriously. Norm's piggy noises are the cutest thing EVER. I want to steal him.

Can't wait for next month :)

As for the dining room, it looks beautiful! Seriously, I love it! For the sideboard, it's similar to the one I have in my kitchen, and I just use it for all my white plate storage. You could store similar looking dishes there or go nuts at pottery barn or hobby lobby with little decorations... like small figurines, candles, fake small potted plants, brown antiqued books, etc. The green walls and white furniture lend a garden feel to the room IMO.

  • The dining room looks great! I like the vase idea for the sideboard.

  • The pictures do not do the dining room justice. I absolutely love what you did! Especially the rug.

Can't wait to host next month! I'm working on a list of choices. I'll have it up sometime today so we can vote.

  • I also love the way it turned out and I agree with CD, the pictures don't do it justice. I think you should have some of your nicer servingware or barware on top of the hutch. I would love the vases/flowers/candles looks also.

  • Poor Norm :)

Good job on your project! Maybe keep an eye out for a pretty runner?

  • It looks great. LOVE the sideboard. I keep trying to find a spot for that same piece at our house.
  • Norm misses his lady friends!  LOVE the dining room redo!  Our dining room set looks just like that and I hate the color since it just doesn't match what I wanted to DR to look like, but we can't afford to buy new furniture right now.  You have now given me an idea to change it up!  Did you sand all the pieces before you spray painted it?  Did you have to spray and sealer (or topcoat) on everything after you spray painted it?  How long did the whole process take you to paint it all?

  • Thanks everyone!  And thanks for letting me AW.  I've been working on this room for like three years.

I'm probably not the person to be asking this.  Everything came out *okay* but not great by any means.  But I'll share what I did...

I lightly sanded the flat surfaces, but didn't sand the spindles.  I tried painting with a roller and brush with a paint and primer that matched the exact color of the sideboard thing, but that ended up like crap.  All drippy and no one to paint the spindles evenly.  So I got spray paint that (basically) matched and the trigger attachment Britt recommended and I sprayed over what I had already done and the rest that wasn't done.  I need to slap on a coat of polyurethane over at least the top, but I ran out of time.

It took six or seven cans of spray paint (satin heirloom white) and I did it in stages over three or four days.  Probably less than six hours of actual work though.  And it would have been less if I hadn't wasted my time with the non-spray paint.  I totally should have used spray paint for everything.

  • Thanks for explaining that!  I will have to talk to DH about tranforming our DR table & chairs!

  • If I had just sanded and sprayed instead of trying with the flat paint, it would have been maybe two hours of labor over a day or two so everything could dry and be flipped.
  • Your dining room looks great!!
