potentially dumb gardening question
ok, so I have some bulbs in our one flower bed (tulips)... they are already sprouting as are the daffidols in our neighborhood common areas. What would happen if I planted bulbs now? They probably wouldnt grow until next spring right (its too late)?
Also, what if I planted ones that were already bloomed (or starting too) like from the grocery store... just transferred them? Would a frost kill them??
Was just wondering... silly...

Re: potentially dumb gardening question
I'm no help, but I'd suggest trying to find the Master gardeners information in your area. Also if you find out what zone you're in you can google a ton of information on timing of planting, etc.. Good luck!
Assuming that the bulbs are still good they should grow next year. As for the spring plants that you buy now let them bloom, die, then transfer to the ground for next spring. This is how I get all my hyacinths and tulips. I always forget to buy and plant bulbs in the fall. I am not sure how well they tolerate frost but you could always cover them at night just to protect them. I know crocuses should be frost-resistant since I have seen them grow through the snow.
Thanks for the info... I was just hoping to plant some in the bigger flower bed, but I figured its too late to plant a bulb since I can alrady see the tulips and daffodils sprouting up a good 2-3". I thought maybe getting potted ones that are starting to bloom from the store, but was afraid they'd die since frosts in our region aren't really over until Mother's Day.
Good to know about the crocuses... thanks again

If you are looking for some color now see if you can find some pansies. They are tolerant to the cold weather. I plant them in the fall, stay green through the winter and bloom again now. You may be able to find them in Home Depot or Lowes.
FYI- The Philly Flower Show is next week. They have a shopping area and you can get some interesting bulbs usually for a reasonable price. You just need to remember to plant them
