Mommas

Did you use a bumper in your crib? If not, did you ever put it in?  If so, when?  My reason asking is because Kiley decided to sleep on her tummy, but she keeps getting her arm stuck outside of the crib.  She doesn't know how to get it out and back in the crib, the other day it was all twisted in a weird position, so I'm wondering if it's ok to put the bumper in now?

Re: Mommas

  • Yes, we use the bumper in the crib. I don't remember exactly when, but around 5/6 months.

  • We had the bumper in from day one, but Xander really didn't sleep in his crib until he was about 4-5 months old. You can get the breathable bumper if you are worried about it. Xander now likes to stand on the bumper to make himself taller.

  • We never used a bumper, but Jacob only got his arm caught once. He didn't seem bothered by it either (I think there's a pic of it on my FB). At that point, he was pulling himself up so we didn't want to get him one b/c he'd stand on it. I don't want him falling out of the crib or getting tangled in it. I'm also a SIDS freak and he hasn't had anything but his glowing seahorse in his crib until this week. If she's rolling onto her tummy, she's less at risk for SIDS b/c she can roll over if she can't breathe. But like I said, I'm a SIDS freak, so I wouldn't put a bumper in there.

I was so interested to see the replies and who did it and didn't.

*Rebek*, I am/will be a SIDS freak too, when I told my sister how minimal I am keeping the crib and no bumpers she looked at me like I had a 3rd arm. She then went on to say every year they add something to the list of things not to have (trying to point out that it 'changes often), so I told her that the cases of SIDS has gone down each time they did that too, because it was getting to be a smaller list of things to have in there. I think that is when I grew a 4th arm.

  • I think I put the bumper in around 6 months? Ryan started moving around a ton and banging into the sides of the crib. Now he sleeps with the top of his head smashed into the bumper and/or tries to stick his arms out so we like as much of the bars covered as possible!

  • Pooks, just wait till the "peer pressure" sets in! At daycare, Jacob is the only kid without something cute in his crib -- bumpers, blankets, stuffed animals. I don't get it. I wonder whether I missed some PSA about it being OK during the day to sleep w/ stuff in the crib? I'm not sure. Daycare has even laid Jacob down with a blanket before. We put all of his stuffed animals along the sides of the crib (you know what we have -- the "classic" version of your convertible one) and when he wakes up, he can pull them all down and play with them. But when he's asleep they're out of the crib.
  • We put the breathable mesh bumpers in at about 4 months after Dunc got caught in the slats-- I like it a lot, has just a bit of softness to give, breathable, and Dunc can't use it to climb since it will collapse.

  • We don't use the bumper that came with our set (yes it was a waste of money since we don't use the comforter either) but we were both too nervous. Campbell has rolled to his belly to sleep since about 6 months and hasn't gotten anything stuck yet but the slats are pretty wide. My mom did put a breathable bumper in on the one at her house but her slats are much more narrow and she was worried. I 'approved' a breathable one.

Campbell's crib is like a little jail cot too. It's a hard mattress, no blanket, no bumper, no stuffed animals - just a matress protector, sheet and sheet protector (the 3 layer limit!)

  • right now we use breathable bumpers because we still swaddle (i know, i know) and she still moves herself all over the crib.  i often wake up to her face up against the rails and i am too nervous to put the real bumpers in until she's unswaddled and i know she can move herself if she nestles herself into them.

  • We used a bumper but I don't remember exactly when we put it in. Jordan rolled all over the place when he slept (still does 8 years later). He would have been all bruised up without it.

  • It might have been different if he got stuck more often, but here's the one time it happened:

PS: Sorry for being a PW today. I am restless at work.

  •  That is a total "WTF?" face! Love it.

We'll be PW's together (well, until my boss comes back).

  • Thanks girls! I put in today, I'm sure she will be fine. She's gotten out every night now. Jess, I thought you were stopping the swaddle, like 2 weeks ago!?
  • Pshht, we STILL swaddle Campbell and the kid is basically 12 months old. We swaddle him and then when he gets laid down, he pops his arms out and rolls over (this has been since 6 months). At this point the swaddle is just a cue that hey, it's bed time and sort of relaxes him I think.

Hahahaha!! BUSTED! That is so funny! I'm sure something clicks with him when he's swaddled and he knows it's bedtime. I can't believe he can stand it anymore though. Jacob was miserable in his swaddle once he could flip over.

  • We just moved her to the crib last month and put the breathable bumpers on.  It's more the "re-breathing" thing that scared me more than suffocation hazard since she doesn't really move around at night.  Maybe that's not so much a danger at her age?  I don't know.  I had the regular bumpers on the crib up until last month because they looked pretty haha.

lol i'm a quitter.  i know i suck.  it's like an addiction.  we all sleep so much better.  that's actually not fair to say.  she goes to sleep fine, it's when she wakes herself up and then scratches the hell out of her face (no matter how short we file her nails down.)

we usually do the sleepsuit but she was still scratching her face so i put her back into the swaddle until my trusty tweezerman file got delivered.  we can now resume our regularly scheduled unswaddling procedure. i have been putting her down for naps unswaddled here and there.

  • Haha! Is that some special  nail file I should get? Just because I'm cutting Kiley's nails every other day and they are still super sharp when she gets us!
