Dana couldn?t imagine Mark had brought her to the same pizza place. The night was going well otherwise and it was down the street from the bowling alley so she decided not to call him out on it. At least not on the second date. Was this a date? Since she decided she was maybe/probably still in love with Richard she didn?t feel the same kind of pressure she usually felt when she was on a ?real? date.
They walked up to the counter and observed all the cheesy carbohydrate choices behind the glass. ?I?ll have a slice of barbecue chicken, an order of garlic knots, and a diet Coke,? said Dana. She decided not to pull the classic eat-like-a-bird move this time around with Mark as he didn?t seem like the kind of guy to notice that sort of thing anyway. Besides, she was exhausted from bowling. It seemed a lot more physical than she remembered from high school. Mark ordered two slices of pepperoni and paid for them both while Dana had been fumbling in her purse looking for her wallet. ?Thanks,? she said.
?Well I think traditionally the loser of a sporting event is obligated to buy the winner a beer,? said Mark as they walked to the same booth they had sat in last week, ?but I think pizza is an acceptable alternative, considering it?s a week night and all,? he paused, ?unless you wanted to get a beer after this?? Dana considered the question thoroughly as she chewed her garlic knot. An evening in three parts was beginning to seem like a date, no longer a ?friends who like to bowl and eat pizza? event. The invitation also seemed to imply a ?would you like to extend our evening by consuming inhibition lowering substances together?? tone to it, unless she was over-analyzing it which wouldn?t be the first time. Without a fleeting thought to Richard and his lukewarm text messages, Dana answered, ?yes, I?d like a beer.?
The door to the pizza place rang open and in walked Michelle with her eldest daughter Katie in tow. She locked eyes with Dana and gave her a look to confirm they should pretend not to know each other. Unfortunately, this unspoken agreement failed to extend to Katie, who rushed over to their table while Michelle looked on apologetically. ?Hi Dana,? she said, ?we?re on our way back from karate. That?s a nice shirt. Wait, isn?t that my mom?s?? Dana blushed.
?Hi Dana, we?re just picking up a pie on our way home. Don?t they have the best pizza here?? asked Michelle who had come to stand next to Katie. Of course, she couldn?t help but look at Mark as well. ?I?m Michelle, I work with Dana. This is my daughter Katie.?
?It?s a pleasure to meet you both,? said Mark. ?Dana calls you her guardian angel,? he told Michelle, who beams at this revelation. ?And karate?? he asks, turning to Katie, ?do you go to Power Do Jo? That?s where I learned too.? Katie starts excitedly telling Mark about her latest class while Michelle goes to the counter to ask about her order. After a while, she takes a seat a few booths away and calls Katie over. ?It?s going to be a few minutes, honey,? she explains.
?Why don?t you join us?? Mark calls out. He scoots over in the booth and Katie immediately sits down next to him and keeps talking. Reluctantly, Michelle joins the table, embarrassed to be crashing Dana?s date. ?You?re eating garlic?? she whispers? Dana laughs, and then panics at the thought of kissing Mark, but quickly pretends Michelle had said something funny instead. ?So, Michelle,? says Mark, ?tell me an Evil Boss Lady story, I?ve enjoyed several from Dana already.? He listens attentively as Michelle explains how Alex needs to have coffee served to her exactly three times a day. At a quarter to nine, she wants all regular. At eleven thirty, half decaf and half regular. And by three she needed all caffeine once again. Even if she was in a meeting she would stop what she was doing and call out ?Mi-chelle,? in her fake French accent.

I like the characters and how round Dana seems. I want to know more about how she and Richard ended the relationship and how she and Mark have met. I am interested in their first date. Could maybe you have more details on that? I wasn't clear on why Dana and Michelle wouldn't acknowledge each other: not wanting to interfere, the drive-by evaluation??
Take a look at your next to the last paragraph. You changed verb tenses. It was past, but shifted to present. Did you mean to do that? Why?
I may have missed it but I'm confused as to why Dana didn't want Michelle to acknowledge her. Dana is Michelle's boss?
I guess it was because Dana was on a (sorta) date and didn't want to have the guy she barely knows meet her coworker and best friend. I guess it would help if you knew who the characters were more but it's part of a larger piece. Next time I'll post a synopsis first.
And the tense thing I totally missed so thanks!
