McCain says Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens should quit

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081028/ap_on_el_pr/mccain_stevens

So, McCain says he should drop out of the race and Palin says step aside? Why the double talk?

  • Aren't quitting and stepping aside the same thing?
  • Per the 17th Amendment, the governor can choose a replacement. ?Some states require a special election though, and I'm not sure if Alaska is one of those states.

According to a story I read in the Anchorage Daily News, Alaska law prohibits the governor from appointing a replacement and instead has a special election. The law was enacted after Murkowski (Palin's predecessor) appointed his daughter to fill the Senate seat he left vacant upon becoming governor. The story mentioned that the courts have not yet ruled on that law, so I don't know if that means that there is a challenge in the courts or that there is anticipated to be one or if it was just a reporter writing nonsense.

  • Thanks, I wasn't sure. ?States are allowed to require special elections, so any challenge would probably be on other grounds. ?Did the reporter give the grounds?

Nope. It wasn't even clear that there was a challenge pending. (I couldn't see why there would be. Until now, there probably hasn't been an actual controversy, so any suit wouldn't have been ripe.)

According to the story currently on the front page of adn.com:

The Republican Party of Alaska is urging voters to support Stevens anyway as he returns to Alaska today to make a final push before Tuesday's election. The message: If Stevens wins and then resigns or is expelled from the Senate, there would be a special election giving Republicans another opportunity to keep the seat out of Democratic hands.

So no mention of a challenge in this story. Maybe the earlier mention was a mistake? Today's story also mentions that Mitch McConnell said that if Stevens is re-elected, there is a "zero chance" that he would not be kicked out.

  • I think quitting is premature, but I haven't seen the latest developments regarding the withholding of evidence by the prosecutor.

  • You all KNOW Palin is calculating her Plan B here.  I mean, who wouldn't be?
