Regarding my not so wonderful class

Awhile ago I was asking for the teacher's of our board to help me out with one of my unruly classes.  They have been doing better, but the regular teacher was out on Friday and they have been a little out of control...even for her!  So today I had them for music class.  They were so loud (banging on desks, yelling, talking over me, etc) that we did not hear them dismiss bus riders and every single one of those kids missed their bus.

I was freaking out!  I took them to the office and explained what happened and my principal backed me up 100% and talked to the kids about needing to listen to the teacher instead of talking over me all the time.  They called all the busses back and the students were able to get home, but still I left crying thinking I was going to get into some trouble.

I talked to my principal later and she said no.  She knows the problems I have had in there and she said it was one mistake.  To help with the class we are going to have one of the African American young male paras come into the classroom when I am in there for the next few weeks so he can help me keep the class under control (the class has about 12 African American males so they respond better to the paras than to me).  I am happy that hopefully things will improve soon, but I hate that I have to do it in the first place.

So yeah...that was how I ended my school day....so how was yours?

  • I remember you asking for advice.  It sucks so bad that they are still like that.  I teach 4th grade and my class is fantastic but I also teach the 3rd grade science.  The 3rd grade sounds just like that.  They are out of control.  The only problem is that the principal ignores it....she doesn't want to see there is a problem because she doesn't want to deal with it.   I hope it gets better for you

  • I almost cried today at work too!  I was grading physics quizzes (which students were allowed to use their notes on) and although I didn't calculate the average I am guessing it was about 17 points out of 31. I have just had so much trouble getting the class this year to understand ANYTHING.  I have tried structuring my units different ways, trying new activities, using new examples, etc and I just can't get their brains to wrap around physics.  I just felt like such a failure as a teacher.

  • My 3rd graders had a quiz today on the planets.  It simply said "name the 8 planets in order from the sun"  One student raised his hand and said and I quote "Wait!  I thought we were learning about space not plants"  Hello!?!?!  It said P-L-A-N-E-T-S

  • Oh thank God I'm not the only one feeling as though I'm beating my head against a wall...My seniors just finished presentations on Landmark court cases and I kid you not I probably told them 10 times in the past two days there was a quiz they should be taking notes on the cases, yet one of the kids says, "wait there's a quiz?!"  It's open notes and I'll bet 75% or more fail because they do not think they need to do anything else!  Then my juniors are working on a study guide and I gave them the first answer, 10 minutes later a kid calls me to his desk to ask about it...And my freshmen complained about having to write 4 slides themselves...finally one of them says, you know the more we complain the more she'll make us write (he's usually not the smartest tool in the toolbox but that was pretty britght!)

Luckily I do not have the same kids I had last year at the end of the day...I left most days feeling like crying with them-and sadly I can trace it back to when everything got out of control with them...3/4 of them had two social studies and administration decided to disrupt every one of my classes to watch Obama address the students (recorded of course) so most of them hated the President and had to watch him the second time in my class...
