Iron pills?

Anyone take iron pills? It's officially medically necessary for me now.. my dr said that there are a ton of different brands and formulations that are OTC, and that some have different side effects than others. Just curious if anyone has a favorite. lol

Re: Iron pills?

  • I had to take them for a while because every time I went to give blood it came back too low and they said I was borderline anemic. I just took the Kroger brand over the counter ones. They do sometimes cause constipation I've heard, but since I eat a fiber-rich diet I didn't have side effects.

  • Yeah, I keep getting deferred from giving blood, and it actually keeps getting LOWER every time I try. Drat. Doc said I should probably suck it up and take the pills. lol. I eat a lot of fiber too, so hopefully that won't be a problem.

My doc goes, "some people don't like the constipation" ..... I'm thinking, "umm... but some do???" hahaha

I go less than that... Embarrassed

  • Whoa, if you go less than that, iron is going to really create a situation for you. I take extra iron via Rainbow Light Just One prenatals. It does have added probiotics in it to help digestion, so that might mitigate some of the slowing factors.
  • Great, now all I can picture is Mike from Jersey Shore talking about my digestive tract.

I'll look into that, though... I'm sure probiotics wouldn't hurt.

  • I used to go maybe once a week until I started probiotics. My OB recommended the nondairy ones from Native Sun. I am now a regular. I took Slow Fe iron tablets in 2008 when I was borderline anemic. I did not have any side effects from it.
  • Can you try eating more iron rich food? One of my cw's was told they needed more iron so now she's eating a lot of cream of wheat. Obviously I don't know if that works.

  • Yeah, I did a 3 month trial with that... I ate an absurd amount of sunflower seeds, red meat, and raisins....... and my iron went down. haha. It's most likely an absorption problem they think  (fat, though, has NO problem getting absorbed), which is why they want to try straight iron pills next.

  • I am anemic. I tried taking the iron pills like my doctor said, but I did not like how they made me feel. I just take an adult gummy multi vitamin ( which is not enough but I don't even care anymore) and continue to let them say no to me when it comes to donating blood. When it comes time for me to make babies or be pregnant, then I will do something about it then, but for now I just ignore it.
  • I was anemic in the second half of my pregnancy with Jonathan, and took SlowFe as well. I already had GI issues just from being pregnant, so the pills didn't help that. I started taking fiber pills (generic Walgreens brand), and it helped a bit. I still have issues with it though. I try to eat a yogurt daily and a fiber-rich diet, but I think I just have GI problems. I am going back on the iron pills (been feeling low again, not sure I ever got back to normal after birth) until I can get checked again, so I'm going to try the probiotics.
