Extreme Couponing

I just saw it from start to finish yesterday and I was glued to the tv like Indifferent

I just don't understand the need to stock up on that many items at one time. Sure a few month supply at a great deal (laundry soap, toilet paper...) but who the hell is going to eat over 100 candy bars? I did like the guy who was going to donate most of the food to a local food bank.

I just couldn't imagine pushing my husband out of a room that was ment for him and his stuff, just so I could put almost 200 boxes of pasta in it like the first lady did.

Yikes!

  • It was on TLC as a 1 hour doc, but I believe they are going to have a series start up this spring.

  • oh my goodness I know. I was blown away. I can't believe totals that were almost $3,000 were knocked down to like $150... its crazy. I just didn't understand how stores would let you use that many coupons for the same item... and what happends to the tax?! The math never adds up for me, but those people are a little much.... those "stock" rooms are outrageous...

::raises hand:: give me 100 days and I could do it. So long as it's Snickers.

Oh the deals are amazing! The stores up here don't let us double up on coupons :(

I do know that some states don't have tax on grocery items, so that might be the reason they can get it so cheap.

yeah none of our stores double up (let alone 50 BOGO candy bar coupons) either. NC charges regular tax (7.75%) on non-food groceries and 2% food tax for food items... I never thought about it before... but I guess thats how they get away with everything being so cheap.

  • I think it's sad that they don't have anything better to do than figure out how to get things for free from the grocery store. How about you people try spending time with your children?

No kidding! I think the first lady said she spends like 50 hours per week couponing and she still have a full time job on top of that! And I am not so sure I would want my kid dumpster diving for anything, let alone coupons with me.

  • I haven't watched the show, but I'm a coupon lover. Publix doubles coupons here, and you can use a store and manufacturers coupon on the same item, if you can find them. It adds up to big savings. Between coupons and just buying what's on sale, I usually save more on groceries than I spend. Some people get crazy with it though. I wouldn't dedicate a room of my house for stocking up.. Heck, I won't even visit more than one grocery store in a week (Some people travel around to 2 or 3 stores. I'm not that committed.) I will confess that I currently have 3 bottles of laundry detergent, 6 4 cup boxes of chicken broth, and about 8 boxes of various pasta, but I draw the line there.

Wowzers. Maybe I need to watch this show. I usually spend an hour on the weekends cliping/printing coupons and then menu planning. An hour of my time is worth the $50+ dollars I save on groceries every week.

Your approach is reasonable. The people on this show dedicate hours a day to couponing, at the expense of spending time with their families. One girl had her 4 year old AND her pregnant friend dumpster-diving for coupons with her. Also, stockpiling 200+ of the same item is just ridiculous. One couple had enough toilet paper in their house to last them 40 years.

Right? Also, crazy dumpster diving lady, here's a hint. go to your local newspaper office. We ALWAYS have extra coupon inserts laying around that just get recycled.

This! I always grab a few extras on my way out of the door because we just toss them by the next Sunday since we have so many of them!

I might grab some more extras though now that I heard of a system where you can send any unused or expired (within 30 days) coupons to military bases for families to use. Seems like a cheap easy way for me to help out.

Oooh, can you send me the info on that? I'd like to do the same thing.

This one is from one of the ladies on the show (dumpster mom) but the lady she has helping actually organizes them and mails them to the bases.

    http://www.ocpnet.org/

This the site that the Krazy Coupon lady uses. If you want to mail them yourself this one gives direct mailing info, but I am not sure how up to date the list is.

    http://www.grocerysavingtips.com/expiredgrocerycoupons.htm

I think this might be the most updated list I found.

I just did a google search for "coupons for military families" and these were the few that popped up!

  • The coupons for military families programs are great. Also, if something is free or almost free and I know we don't want/need it, I take it to the food bank at our church.
  • i'm a couponer, and i get free groceries regularly. i build my own stock piles..but only for personal use. i give away things occasionally (i.e. when i got 10 tubs of free butter in a week). it's really really easy, if you follow the right blogs... i spend less than 1 hour a week doing so, and pick up at least $20 a week in FREE groceries.. sometimes i get paid to take things out of the store too.  i subscribe to 5 copies of the sunday paper for my coupons, so i don't go dumpster diving!
