daycare if stressing me out

Ugh!!!! Everyone said to start early, so I've been calling people off a list I got from the county. So far everyone is full! There are only two daycare centers in my area and they're both super expensive, so I don't want to call them unless I absolutely have to. I'm ready to pull my hair out! Angry

Re: daycare if stressing me out

  • Do you have a church that you could call, maybe they have a listing of members that do in home?

  • they just said they're full, that's it? how do they know if they'll still be full when you NEED daycare? i've been on two waiting lists since last summer. we have tours at both of them next week. of course the college daycare is being noncommital about having an opening (grrr) but the other one in town said it looks promising for us. i have another one i want to call and get on there list, just in case both of these don't work out. good luck! but ask more questions, see if they'll put you on a waiting list at least.

    This.

Or ask friends, co-workers...anyone who's opinion you trust if they know of someone who does in-home care.  And don't just ask people with kids, child-less people might know of someone who knows of someone.  That's what happened to me.  Ashley saw that I was stressing about daycare for Amelia (either on here or FB) so she did some asking around.  Amelia now goes to the same lady as Ashley's DH's cousin's kids.  AND, she's significantly less then putting Amelia in "regular" daycare.

    Good luck with your hunt!

  • Also check out care.com.  They have listing for in-come daycares.  We used care to find our nanny, but I noticed that they also had daycare listings too.

ITA. That's how I found May's sitter. She is fantastic and gets NO complaints, but she only goes by word of mouth.

  • A big reason why we haven't had another baby yet [besides the whole Air Force separation thing] is that daycare is so.damn.expensive. We filed our taxes last weekend and paid almost $8000 out of pocket for daycare last year. It boggles my mind - but daycare on the Air Force base is SO much cheaper than that, so we'll save a lot of money when we move. Thank the good heavens.

I agree with using care.com and word of mouth. At JJ's daycare, we got ridiculously lucky and were able to take a kiddo's spot without going on a waitlist, but one of the parents I know was on a list for two years to try to get in there. I know you'll find something that will work out!

  • I would check to see if they at least will take a waitlist for the summer, even the fall depending on how long your leave is, or hopefully someone has a good suggestion for you.

  • Ugh... That stinks, Ali.

I know my mother and sister are helping me and I think my MIL is also...think meaning I have not asked her.

All of this has me NOT researching options outside of family...but I probably should be...even though my mother says the baby will not be going into day care...

But I was told to start early also.

I got a list of the licensed in home providers from the county website. Everyone I ask either has recommendations that are on my list or don't know of anyone. When they say their full, they give me a month but it's typically not until 2012. I did get on two people's "wait list" so we'll see. I have one appt next Tuesday that does have an opening, but she's starting an autistic child in April that may have some anger issues. Not sure how well that mixes w/a baby. She said she's getting a full time helper, so maybe with 2 people there it'll be ok. We'll see.

  • You know what really pissed me off, I was told to start early, and I did, and I called some lady who put out tons of posts on Craigslist about how great it was and she answers the phone "Hello?" "Um, hi, is this _____?" "....yeah?" "I saw your ad on Craigslist...I'm due in September and would be looking for daycare in November Monday-Thursday. Will you have any openings then?" "How am I supposed to know if I'll have openings then? You need to call back later." "Okay, when would you say I should call back?" "I don't know, August? Maybe?"

...yeah, I didn't call her back.

Definitely get on waiting lists. Some lucky parents unexpectedly got our daycare spot when I lost my job.

With Nate, they were promoting a child to the toddler room the same month we wanted to start in the infant room, and we got on the waiting list 5 or 6 months before our start date.

My H had this same experience.  People's phone etiquette amaze me.  I figure it's a good way to start your screening process Wink
