Discharge question

I would just like to know if anyone else experienced something like this, or knows what it may be. I dont have health insurance, so Im wondering if I should be concerned before I go in and make an appointment:

I started my period and I had a tampon in. Despite that, I felt something slip out and when I went to the bathroom, I found discharge that looked/felt like skin, covered in bright red blood, with some dark veins in it. It was about the size of a silver dollar.

I have never seen anything like it, and I've had my period for about ten years now. Can anyone offer any insight?

Re: Discharge question

  • uh, could you have been pregnant? i would usually say it's probably a big blood clot, but the veins part freaks me out.

  • ya, the whole thing was freaky...

This is my first month on a new birth control, but I took a pregnancy test before I started the birth control, and it was negative... I was very very nauseous for this first month of birth control tho, I could tell the time by my nausea! I wasnt sure if I was getting used to it, or pregnant so I took another test, again negative, but that was early on, about three weeks ago, maybe more

  • Sometimes, pregnancy test have failure rates. Head to your doctor and let him/her know the story. From a medical glimpse, it sounds like it could have been pregnancy but it could have been something. . . else. (dermoid cyst, fibroid, etc.)
  • well, unless you know when you ovulated it'd be hard to say if you should have gotten a definite positive or if it was still too early to know. either way, i'd call the doctor tomorrow and relay the story just to see what they have to say about it.

  • I would say call a doctor or, because you don't have health insurance, call a planned parenthood. Usually they can help you for a free or reduced rate, I would be pretty concerned about that. It doesn't sound like just a really big clot to me.

  • It kinda sounds like a clot to me. The past few years I have had clots kind of like that. I am not on any kind of birth control. (We use condoms.)

Also, clotting is a side effect of some birth controls....

I would suggest going to your doctor if you are worried or feel like you should. At least call them. That doesn't cost anything. :)

  • ditto see a doc. clot, fibroid, and perhaps a pregnancy loss ...  Regardless, you don't want it to happen again. If there is something bigger going on --it could lead to more dangerous blood loss. Could be nothing, and i know you don't have insurance but maybe planned parenthood could give you some insight or at least to an ultrasound to see if whatever was in there is completly gone.. If not there could be many more complications.
  • I'm not saying that this is what it is...But thats what it looked like when I had my miscarriage. I would go to the doc. (Not that you want to hear that lol)

I don't know about a miscarriage. For the simple fact that if it was so early that it was only MAYBE a month along, it would NOT be the size of a silver dollar. Probably something else. But you should go to a doctor to be checked out.

  • Sounds like a fibroid to me.  I would see a Dr. or visit PP, though, to doublecheck.
