S/O: Eyes - Kid's Color Probability

Recently I asked DH if our kids will have blue eyes since we both do (I know we learned about recessive genes/genes in 5th grade but obviously don't remember).  He said, "no, they're have brown eyes". Me: "wtf, no they won't.  None of our parents even have brown eyes", him:"yep, you're looking at him" Points to our dog.

Anywho, here's a cool "calculator" I found.  Obviously nothing's 100% accurate and it also doesn't offer "hazel" as an option, but it's still pretty interesting:

Re: S/O: Eyes - Kid's Color Probability

  • IF we have kids, I would love for them to have my blue eyes, but they would probably have Steve's brown asian eyes. But he is 1/2 caucasian... so maybe there is some blue recessive genes in there somewhere?? (He was adopted - from South Korea, so we have no idea about his biological family)

But how beautiful woud a Korean baby with blue eyes be?!?

  • Interesting...C and I both have brown eyes, but everyone on my mother's side is blond hair/blue eyes.  I told him recently that there is a possibility that our kids could have these features.  He said if our kids come out with anything other than brown eyes he's blaming the mailman! :-P

    86.3% chance of brown

    8.5% chance of green

    5.1% chance of blue

    Go figure!

  • Interesting!  I know that eye color is really tricky.  My brother in law has zero blue eyed people in his family, and my nephew's eyes are a beautiful blue.

Everyone in our family has blue except my dad, whose are green.  Chris' family is mostly brown (including him), but his dad and sister are blue, so I figure our kids have at least a chance.

This is how the calculator came up with our results:

    Blue: 37.5%
    Green: 12.5%
    Brown: 50%

  • That neat, but I have no idea what it means... can someone explain?

Does it mean that 4 out of 6 of my potential kids will have blue eyes?

Or does it mean that there's a 50%-ish chance my kids will have brown eyes?  I'm confused.

  • I believe it's the percentage that each child has of having those color eyes.

  • Yea, so since they don't count hazel it's not accurate... damn me any my hazel, color-changing eyes!
  • Oh fun!  I'm hoping and praying that light eyes show up in one of our kids.  I have light brown and blues are all over my fam (including my brothers crystal clear baby blues! Angry and my dad's very light hazel) but Mike's eyes are basically black and he has all browns in his family.

    Brown 83.3%   Green 11.1%   Blue 5.5%

Here's hoping for that 16.6% of light eyes to show up!

  • My mom has hazel, but are closest to green, so with that we are 100% likely to have blue-eyed kids.

Wonder what is says if I put in brown for her...will see and update. ETA: Yep, no matter how I spin it, we're supposedly destined to have blue-eyed offspring. Yay :O)

Hazel eyes aren't represented in this chart because the jury is still out on whether they should be considered "brown" or "green" or whether they have entirely their own allele.  Check this cool article out:

    http://www.brighthub.com/science/genetics/articles/16272.aspx

For this test above, my husband has hazel eyes.  If i say his eyes are green, we have a 50% chance of blue eyed kids, and 50% chance of green eyed kids and 0% for brown.  If, however, I decide that his hazel means brown, then suddenly the numbers change significantly.  it's now 37.5%, 12.5% and 50% respectively.

  • Soooo I'm super bummed.

    72.7% Brown
    13.6% Blue
    13.6% Green

My mom, dad and myself have blue eyes. His mom, dad and himself have brown eyes.

So why is there such a huge brown percentage and why is green in there at all?

  • According to this neat little tool... we won't have babies with eyes any other color than blue!

ETA: and when I tell it my eyes are green (as they are actually blue/green/grey), we have a 50/50 chance of blue- and green-eyed babies.

    I got 50% Blue/ 50% Green

I can only hope they get Dave's bright blue eyes. Both his parents have blue eyes.

I have blue/green...which isn't really an option....But my mom has hazel and my dad has baby blue eyes.

    I guess it'll be a surprise.

  • Ron's side is almost exclusively blue-eyed, with a couple of green-eyed people, and mine is exclusively green...seriously, we don't have anyone in our family with blue or brown eyes.  At all.  It's kind of freaky.

So it was no surprise to me that the calculator says 50/50 chance of either blue or green.  All three of my biological kids have the same green eyes that I do (it's a really distinctive shade of green), and his biological kids are 2 brown-eyed (their mother had brown eyes) and 2 blue-eyed.  I'm hoping, if we're blessed with a little  biological miracle of our own, he/she will get his beautiful blues.

(It doesn't figure in genetically, but if anyone cares, our foster daughter wants you to know that she has brown eyes Smile)

  • We have an 86% chance of our children having brown eyes.  We shall see :o)

  • We are a whole bunch of blue eyed people so I am pretty sure that blue eyed babies are in our future!

What a neat little tool; I'll have to pass it along to my friend who is expecting.  Thanks for sharing Hannah!

  • MIL: brown
    FIL: hazel (green)

    My mom: blue
    My dad: blue

    Me: blue
    Zach: brown

here's what they said on the site:

    Blue: 20.8%
    Green: 29.1%
    Brown: 50%

I was hoping for brown eye'd babies! Granted, I'd also like one that looks like me, but with his Irish blood, it looks like we'll have one that looks more like his sister - red hair, green eyes. Schuette blood all the way around! Which is fine - the Dexter side is whack.
