I know Stef was looking into the Garmin Forerunner and I'm not sure if you got it or not, but reading your posts on dailymile reminded me of my poor man's Garmin.
I got a Nike + Sportband ($50-$60) and LOVE it. it comes with the little bean that you're supposed to put into a Nike compatible shoe, but you can get an attachment to just strap it onto your laces (for like $3-$10). The band is like a watch, but it's really a USB that you can plug into your computer after you're done. It tracks everything for you and keeps all your information on the Nike website. It doesn't matter where you run (treadmill or outside) and it's good if you need a turnaround point. I lurve it.
It's really helped with motivation since i love seeing it all get input into the system and look at all my workouts.
Re: My running ladies
i just cannot get into these things like digital things that help you run or read or whatever. i can run just fine without something tracking me, etc. i just listen to my body, measure the distance i am running on the treadmill (or if outside, i just drive my car the same route and measure it on my odometer, etc) and go for it. no need to see how fast i run, that i could really care less about right now.
but it does sound like a good option for those looking into a way to track what they are doing!

The downside is there is no GPS
That was the big drawback for me, it's just a straight measurement of distance and time based off of the bean tracker. For GPS the Garmin is the bomb. But I'm the same, I couldn't validate the cost. That and the sportband was a lot lighter which, for a wimp like me, made a difference.
But a plus side is with the sportband, it automatically logs you into a system like dailymile and inputs your information. If you know anyone else using the same Nike bean, you can add them to your group and do challenges against each other. Right now I have a challenge with my college friend on who can get to 40km faster.
So it's not GPS, but can track your distance and speed? That's all I really want.
Shauni, the reason I want something like this is that I run outside exclusively on trails in my neighborhood, so I've got no way to measure the distance. I tried mapmyrun.com, but it's not great. I do have the RunKeeper app on my phone, but the app has to be running (not in the background), which means I can't mess with the iPod functions on the phone. Blurg. Also, I tend to run faster outdoors, but then I get worn out faster. I'm trying to learn to pace myself.
