...so DH got a job..

...but it's all comission. I have a few mixed feelings about it.

he got a job in insurance, so now he's studying like crazy to get his license.

On one hand, I'm extremely excited because he's so in love with the stuff he's working with. He loves helping people figure out what is best for them and whatnot.

But on the other hand, we probably can't use anything he makes towards a mortgage. Also, since he was off the books at the farm, we had to put our car in my name when we bought it, so with that and my school debt, it will be difficult for me to get a mortgage on my own.

 Sigh.

I'm just happy that he really enjoys this so far, and he has the oppotunity to move up in a few years. Actually, in 3 years, they will pay for him to take his Cheif Financial Planner test, which is his ultimate goal. This is also a really amazing company.

totally unrelated, I've been too exhausted to really post much/pay attention to the boards. My students start their state exams this week, so it's been nuts/ stressful preparing them and getting ready.

Re: ...so DH got a job..

  • the insurance jobs always made me nervous bc of the commission and having to make your own "sales"...but if he loves it, then i think that's great!

fwiw-our mortgage loan is only in DH's name (i hadn't been working long enough with the same employer). he has 85k in student loans and at the time he had over 10k owed on his truck still, plus a few other minor odds & ends and he got approved for a loan no problem. i think you'll be just fine!

  • I feel ya, DH has an all-commission job.

Our house mortgage is in both of our names and I have $61K of student debt and a car payment and he's in an all-commission job. FWIW, with credit ratings it actually looks good to have debt and make steady payments rather than to have no debt - they'd rather see that you are consistant and know how to handle owing money.

  • it also has to do with the debt to income ration. but i can't remember the calculation for that-i bet you know it though!!

Hooray for your H finding something he enjoys! Hopefully it translates into an awesome (and stable) career for him.

And from what everyone else said, it seems like the commission part won't affect you getting the HELL out of your apartment...YAY!

  • Congrats on DH finding a job!  That's great to hear that he loves it and they'll help him take his test in a couple of years! SL debt doesn't really matter much as far as a mortgage or even a car loan go.  The loans don't hurt or help your credit - unless you don't pay them and they become defaulted - then they hurt your credit.  Otherwise they just fit into your debt to income ratio and that's what really matters outside of credit score.
